What happened to the widely internet-published release date of R600? March 30th came and went... and nothing appeared.

how long must we wait? will there be a version at a similar price to the 8800GTS?
good news about the bridge chip for those back on AGP though |

AGP!? PCI-Express 2.0 is just around the corner. Let it die, already.

I would still buy an AGP card for my system.
I have a 2.8ghz Prescott, 2gb DDR, 320gb SATA2 that's plenty fast for everything, all I need is a faster card for games.

My Pentium M 740 @ 2.7Ghz could really use a great video card and i'd rather keep it than have to buy an extra board-cpu-ram just to have a recent video card only problem though is that once games will require dual core processors.... i'll be screwed Last edited by Ghys; 3rd Apr 2007 at 17:13. |

It's pointless porting faster and faster GPU's over to an AGP config because eventually you'll be utterly bottlenecked by your CPU - alright the 7900GS won't do, but an 8800GS will, and an R600 probably will too.
Eventually, you've got to ask why bother spending the extra to get an AGP-converted card, when a good mobo with a PCI-e slot and the PCI-e version can be had for the same price... Dothan's are a special case, but that's always been the way with them.

The problem is not porting over to AGP spec as much as the fact that games still can't fill AGP bandwidth. Remember there's a difference between gpu to ram bandwidth.
The only real benefit right now is dual pci-e cards and future proofing. While old this article has valid points... http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/ar...is_conclusions For me, I don't want to spend around $600-1,000 upgrading my system right now. It's not worth it for the speed increase. The only increase I need is a video card increase.

Glad to hear they'll have an agp version. I really didn't want to by a new cpu/mobo/ram and video card this summer.

"It's pointless porting faster and faster GPU's over to an AGP config because eventually you'll be utterly bottlenecked by your CPU" Why dish out money for such a high end video card it's better to upgrade peripherals and go with a mid range card. You will get more performance wise and be able to future proof.

AGP is good currently running an x1950pro here and i'm not cpu bottle necked in every game yet (just most :P). Realistically though it's my last AGP card, I see little point in porting the next generations high end cards apart from showing that it can be done.
So far though I have managed to miss out sckt939, DDR2 and AM2 which has saved me money while still having a pc thats fast enough to run all the latest games well by keeping AGP

I just saw this article today and I thought it was interesting here
It seems like newer GPU's are actually using more than PXIe x8, and benefit from 16x. I wonder if AGP will actually degrade the performance on some DX10 cards. |

I'm sure AGP will degrade performance on DX10 cards, but I doubt it will be enough to make someone feel they have to upgrade. There are still powerful single and dual core and AGP systems out there, and those people will be happy to get some DX10 power going for them.
