I've been wanting to do this for a while ever since I saw a company selling them in a very old edition of top gear. After discovering a nice cheap Cobra clubman car seat on ebay I was commited. The cost of the official ones are £200 I could do it far cheaper.

    http://www.cobraseats.com/clubman.htm

I took my existing chair which was a leather office chair from argos, and try to match it up with the base on the Cobra Clubman. Needless to say they didn't match. I thought about finding some steel plate, but in the size I needed I couldn't find anything suitable.

In the end I discovered a huge pieces of mdf going for a £1 in B&Q so I thought why not try that.

It took me around 2hrs to trim it down to size and drill all the bolts, as well as cutting down some oversized bolts that I needed.

    Anyway onto the pics:

Excuse the background that wall needs painting hehe.

The mdf shows a little bit and when I find half a day I will paint it black to match the chair. Other than that I'm very happy with it. The chair is very comfortable and does all the reclining and spinning that I'm used to.

Few more pics in my gallery: http://www.gordyhand.co.uk/gallery/v/casemodding/others/chari/

    Hope you like it.

Get a 4-point for it, then tell your friends its because your PC is "way too fast".

LOL :D When I told my mate that the chair in the corner of the lounge which was the same he fitted to his beetle many moons ago was going to be my office chair his face was a picture :D

Nah I was going to take some, but got carried away building it instead :D

It's not that hard to repeat, cut mdf piece to shape of chair and drill four holes, match up to chair base and drill four more holes. Find suitable nuts and bolts and your done.

Hey lol, after looking on the site... http://www.cobraseats.com/office_seats.htm

But making it urself is far more fun to do. Realy like the outcome. Only disquising the MDF is the only thing you need to do ;). Anywayz, like the idea behind it cause ive never seen some chair like this :p

There's no reason why you couldn't have arms. Just use a chair that has arms as the base for the cobra chair. :)

    Fantastic idea!

My old leather executive chair is ripped to shreds now and whilst I could just recover it (too much effort and it'll just break if I do it) I like this idea.... off to ebay for a cheap car seat. :)

Just a heads up, the MDF will soak up paint like a sponge. It will probably take you a few coats to get something that looks decent, with a lot of drying time in between coats. Whenever you have a free day, just pull it off and give it a spray every few hours.

Seriously man, that's a beautiful chair, i know my old man has his bosses old kit cars in pieces at the farm, I never even thought to ask for the seats. Thanks for the idea - I'm gonna try and blag some bits after seeing this.
