Enemy Territory: Quake Wars preview

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2007/...wars_preview/1

We sit down with Todd Hollenshead and Paul Wedgwood from id Software and Splash Damage and get hands on with Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, whilst talking about Mega-textures and a Quake movie...

Bots acted semi-intelligently on each team and provided a nicely realistic challenge for our go at the game. Not only did they run around slaughtering each other in the warm-up phase of the game, just as real players tend to, but we also saw them perform some of the more insightful tactics such as clearing minefields with grenades so other team members could drive vehicles through and get to the frontline of the battle.

We found evidence of them dropping proximity mines around some of the extra objectives too, so that they could get down to the main battles while still hindering the opposing team.

We’re happy to report back then that not only does the game play smoothly – though all we could see of the game systems we used were the Logitech G15 keyboards – but that the artificial intelligence we went up against was flawlessly put together. Bots emulated humanity to perfection, even running around shooting each other in the warm-up period just for kicks.
Saying the same thing twice there, sorry for the large quote but it puts it into context a little more.

Still, I must say the game sounds as if its shaping up really rather well, I just hope they don't go overboard on the realism aspect of things. If there is one thing I can't stand it's dying in 2-3 bullets and not having a chance to fight back, which is why Quake games have always appealed to me.

Pretty much the same IMO.

Anyways, great article, interesting read and I hate you for that! Now I'm even more looking forward to getting my hands on this game. Any news on a demo before release?

//edit:

Damn BS... you were about 2 mins faster.

Darn it... that's one of the most annoying things I find about playing games like CS!

QFT. And you can't move/shoot (only look) during the warmup. Thank God.

Considering a large portion of the article was dedicated to praising the super-duper-uber-awesome-totally-sweet-mega-kicks-other-graphics-engines'-collective-asses graphics, those 800x600 screenshots don't really do a great job of showing it off. Any chance of getting some 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 on the scene?

i want this game so badly. I might just save up for that 8800GTS and buy them together when this comes out. oooh how exciting. I will finally be able to stop wasting my time on buggy-crashy-glitchy 2142 servers.

True story. The best ET:W players (and RTCW players for that matter) were able to annihilate most players in the two or three headshots and never needed to unload unless they were caught off guard.

Ramble will become famous soon enough
Looks nice, I used to play classic ET big time and it was a good game, nice and balenced.

They say they have easy vehicle control, I hope that means they're not ****ing around with my driving. Ideally they'd have the same system as BF2, which was the best vehicle control I've ever seen (even if it takes a while to fly).

Is the game DX10 based? I'm guessing an implied 'yes'?

Isn't it about time there was some sort of handicap system in these games for experienced players?

I haven't played a multiplayer FPS since "Alien verus Predator" for the very simple reason that I'm out of practice. There's not a lot of fun in being killed in the first three seconds of life, time after time after time, and when that's happening, you never really get a chance to work your way out of it.

I'm sure this problem is costing them players.

Phil

Nope, it's based on a tweaked up version of the Doom 3 engine (with megatexturing, improved shaders, etc)
