Ubuntu's founder has officially put a stop to recent rumours saying that the distro is "next in line" for a deal with Microsoft.

Ubuntu is clearly a more n00b oriented OS, and i do like it in a way, i like the way apt works (and prefer it to YUM for FC) but i can see why people wouldn't like it

You actually have to say what they have done wrong, sadly MS knows that if they tell the Open source community what they have infringed, they will just change it (if the claim holds water) so that it no longer applies

There is a reason that there is a root account on any Linux system, except for Ubuntu... But there are more flaws in Ubuntu then that... Don't get me started...

And for Apt, if you like it that much, try Debian... They invented apt... And if you want to see a real package manager at work (altought Apt is ok'ish), try Gentoo... Portage is about as good as it gets...

Glider.. As much as a wise man you are.. Consider that most people need to get their feet wet in linux somehow, and for that *buntu is a godsend. You can start off doing things the GUI way and gradually kill your Xserver for more and more CLI time. That's when the power of Linux shines truely. Or just run Fluxbox, blackbox or the likes. Oh, allmost forgot..
After trying to compile Gentoo 6 times and getting random errors every time, I have given up on Gentoo for the time being. Might try again when i fubar my *buntu install. I run Xubuntu on both my Desktop and Laptop atm. Will turn the Lappy into some sort of music/download box as i have extra harddrives. Only thing i need is a spare 2.5" USB box that actually works.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ubuntu is great for their audience... I just hate it like hell But I know I'm not average... To me Linux is about choice and freedom... And being a Ubuntu user yourself, you'll have to admit that a lot of choices have been made in your place.

IMHO that conflicts with the Linux spirit.

But I do recommend Ubuntu (or SLED) to most newbies. It's a great teaser to the power of Linux, but it is too constrained for my personal taste.

On a side note, Gentoo compile errors? That sounds like faulty RAM. Gentoo uses GCC, and in my experience it produces the most stable compiles ever... And the Gentoo manual is super...

that's not the only reason i like ubuntu

i especially like the fact that with ubuntu, if you want to do something, a Google search will tell you what you want 99% of the time, other distros aren't quite as helpful
Ive used fedore core (cli and x) and ubuntu (cli and x) (and a firewall distro of Linux as well, cli only)

Until i really learn Linux, i will probably stick with ubuntu (when i get to use it (cedega just isn't there yet for me))

I still find it quite hard to do very simple things, like i wanted to add a plug-in to gaim on ubuntu, suddenly there's talk of compiling it and no really clear instructions etc
Windows, copy the plug-in to the folder, restart gaim (well pidgin)

Linux is getting there, but its still not ready for the average Joe yet

P.S. why cant stuff just work, or why cant u just run an installer that does it for you, that's what Linux needs, apt/yum/portage/whatever are great when its standard, what to customise it ? good luck

You're missing the point of ubuntu then. Ubuntu is designed as a no hassle, hard to break os that's easy for everyone to use. Disabling the root account gets round all manner of problems that inexperienced users manage to run into.

I don't understand why people who clearly appreciate linux bash other varieties. It's all about purpose... i share one PC at home which has ubuntu and windows - it makes it easy for my girlfriend to use. I have a media server that runs on a unslung nslu2 the linux flavour being chosen due to hardware constraints. And i use a red hat box at work... horses for courses really.

Portage does that to a great extent, leaving out unwanted things... (USE flags cheesecake!)

Zombie, I'm not missing the point, if you read my previous post, you'll see I actually recommend Ubuntu and the likes for newbies. But once you get more advanced you'll find it too constraining. At least I did.

I personally can't find myself in the Ubuntu philosophy, there for I don't use Ubuntu Linux is about choice and in that aspect Ubuntu is quite "not Linux". I'm not bashing Ubuntu, I'm just stating my opinion about it...

EDIT: When I think about it, I am missing the point of Ubuntu a bit... As I said, Linux is about choice, you choose to use Linux for what it is, not because it is Linux. You choose Windows for ease of use and noobfriendlyness, not because it's Windows. You should choose any flavor of Linux for it's great power, not for the sake of having Linux... Given, Ubuntu profiles itself as newbie friendly, and it achieves that quite good, but it attracts a lot of people for the wrong reasons (Being free is NOT a reason to use Linux IMHO, if it would cost as much as Windows, I'd still use it).

But actually it is hard for me to describe my stance pro or contra Ubuntu... It does what it says it does, but it doesn't do what I want.

I think this is part of the beauty of Linux, there is a nice wide range of choices, if you don't like 1 there are others, there is an OS to suit most people
