SanDisk Sansa Base Station

http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/07...base_station/1

SanDisk's Sansa MP3 players are the tune-carriers of choice for the majority of bit-tech staff, so we hook ourselves up to the Base station to see if the Sansa line can continue to win our approval...

Can't say that I'm terribly desperate to pay such a sum for the device...although admittedly I don't have a HiFi, and use my PC for all of my audio needs..

Yeah, I'd buy one if I used my sansa as my music source a lot.
I usually just use my PC though instead.

Still, when I sell my PC and switch to a laptop I may reconsider...

Same hear, if I have it on my mp3 player, it will be on my PC anyway.

I just love your style and humor Joe, with your world-famous rattling test to determine quality ! Soon when given a case to review, they will only fiddle with the power button, then give it a mark based on this...
More seriously, the dock is neat, but the fonctionality is reduced, being only the ability to use a remote.

Terrible.
But if Joe Martin feels entitled to speak of him in such disparaging terms, what does he listen to?

H.B.
Lol, Lionel Richie isn't actually that bad admittedly. My own taste in music is mostly folk-rock and indie. The Weakerthans, Harvey Danger, Metric, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, stuff like that.

I thought the whole point in getting this dock is that you can use the mp3 player when it is charging? (eg. play songs off it at the same time) which you cannot do with the standard usb cable? If you cant do that, then your right, the only useful thing it brings to the table is a remote control

You can charge whilst playing, but it's still not a massive benefit in my mind.

It's too expensive for my tastes but as a Sansa owner, I like it. But then I only have a notebook at the moment - I *could* play through Winamp but that *requires* my PC to be on and also tethers me to a desk. Yes, I'm a niche of a niche but as a non-hifi, non-desktop PC owner, this is of benefit. As with all the popular iPod docks, it would also be of use to people who want a small music system in a different room to their main setup

Or you could plug it into the line-in and enable the loop.

I use my iPod dock + remote all the time, which is essentially exactly the same thing (though for iPods, and in white). I use it plugged into my Hifi, so I have my entire MP3 collection on hand when my computer is off. This is A Good Thing™, since I don't want my computer on all the time. I've got a mains charger plugged in though, and that charges at the same time, which is nice, and I can avoid having to connect to the PC.

I already had the mains charger, but if I didn't you're looking at:
Charger (£25) + Dock (£25) + remote (£18) = a lot of money for the same deal as with the Sansa. But then again, I feel that this sort of device is more useful if you've got a large-capacity player (such as an iPod 30Gb or 80Gb) compared to the relatively small Sansa.

i've always liked the Sansa players.. if I didnt already have a Creative harddrive-based player, I'd certainly look into getting one of their e280's (I think that's the right model). SanDisk for The Win.

Great player, though I would not buy the dock.

Agreed. The audio player is alright, though the dock would only be useful in more wealthy configurations and entertainment rooms.

If it were cheaper and I was richer, I could consider it. I've been looking at getting an e260, but funds = awful.

It should get cheaper. Interestingly the remote is identical (aside from the buttons) to the one I received with my Altec 5021's
