The iPhone Dev Wiki has managed to unlock the iPhone so that you can make calls using any AT&T or Cingular SIM card.

iPhone is a piece of junk. It's popular because Apple made it and it has "i" in the name, got some fncy functions. Apart from that, it offers nothing that would justify that price :/

the only thing that has any sort of innovation (and even thats questionable) is the interface, but that is balanced out by the fact that you can't change the battery; can't store anywhere near as much as the 5G ipods; and that if it dies, you lose everything (mp3, phone, pda)

I would never buy one and I pity the fool that would.

I haven't looked around for a phone, and don't intend to, but is it even possible to BUY the phone without the contract?

It is a shame it was developed in the USA and not in europe (or even japan with their crazy fast mobile data speeds!)

Using the EDGE network is just plain stupid, it's like going back to using a 486 when everyone else uses modern PCs.

I'm actually happy apple has ventured into the phone market, yes its overpriced, made for the "trendies" and has more holes than a sieve, but at least you know in six months tops we will see a flood of "new" clones / new innovative competing products from mass-market-production runs at a tenth of the cost

Actually I did come across a site selling them unlocked a while ago, but they were priced at twice the price that they are now

You dont have to pay someone to have any sim work in the phone, including a prepaid sim. All you have to do is go to a retail store to have it done for you. It was already announced that you could use your phone with prepaid service. Sorry everyone. I guess this is big news for those 'do it yourself' people out there.
