Do LAN centres still work?

With Omega Sektor opening this week, it's certainly a question that's on our minds at the moment - do you think LAN cafes/centres still work in a day when broadband Internet is as fast as it is?

If so, why?

Vote away!

Hmm well there's always going to be some face to face matches look at the programs from G4tv (Don't know if it's Broadcasted in the UK) and besides I think its better to LAN seeing as its a chance for peaople with the same intrests to come together.

For those with weaker PCs and those looking to get into PC gaming its ok but a lan in a basement or garage is more fun to me.

I prefer a LAN with my buds, we usually get around 5-6 friends and just play.

You need another option: "I've never been to a LAN Centre"

Then i can vote.

More along the lines that he's a moron who only got in by massaging the votes a bit.

Oh there's also the little issue of war, fuel prices, etc etc.

And on topic, I'd gladly go at least once... the one in nottingham I believe has closed, and to hop on a 2 hour train just to play some games seems a little pointless to me... then again I gladly hop on a 2 hour train to go to the Apple store in the bullring... so there's hope.

id love to go to a lan event and bring my box with me but gaming on a pc that isnt mine just doesnt feel right so im not interested in that style but sadly there just aren't enough around to go to in the uk (or they are not advertised well in the north west) if there was a Quakecon style tournament held in the UK somewhere (something with that sort of magnitude) i would love to try and go.

I mainly game on my 360, and I socialise a lot over it, socialising doesn't mean you have to actually meet someone, but I regularly just have online conversations with people on my friends list, especially when they are miles away, and because of the headset I have my normal game audio on my speakers and can chat across games. It's easy, and it works,

I'm quite happy to just LAN with my mates. I love the atmosphere when you have your friends there and you can joke around and share stores etc. We usually form a temporary CSS clan and have a great time confusing other people on the servers with our in jokes.

Organised events will always have a place, the competition is what drives people to become good and you get a lot more recognition that those events than you do over an internet connection. Its more social and has the buzz that always goes with big events of any kind.

I could see myself going to a LAN centre if it were local but I wouldn't travel further afield just to go to the centre. Only special events would entice me to make the effort. My main issue is one that is probably shared by many gamers: I like how my computer is setup and customised for me, I'm comfortable with it. When I'm playing on another computer it can feel really strange when, for example, I don't have my custom UI on WoW, or buy scripts on counterstrike and I have to remember how to navigate the buy menu. Maybe I'm just being a bit pretentious about these things but it can really break my stride.

Never been to a Lan Centre, but me and my bro used to have lans at my house during college. Used to get upto 8 people staying the entire weekend with no sleep and pure gaming all through the day and night. Now its just internet for me and as im playing more on 360 than my PC now, I might start playing the 360 on the internet.

Big words, yet Tony Blair made no reservations about following him into Iraq. The fact of the matter is that a large majority of politicians are retarded otherwise Bushy wouldn't have been able to get a way with nearly as much as he did.

That said, there is nothing wrong with them but I prefer a dingy basement of my choosing with close friends...
