Majority of Brits have broadband connection

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/08...d_connection/1

A survey of a random sample of around 1,800 British adults has shown that the majority have a broadband Internet connection.

AOL Platinum: 6Mb down, 0.5Mb up.

Although the connection speed is all over the place at the moment, dropping down to 1.5Mb some days.

Still no broadband at my dads house though - he's close enough to the exchange to get (at most) 1Mb, but the lines are absolute crap and BT refuse to replace them...think they gave him the old "if they're good enough to make phone calls they don't need replacing" excuse.

That survey isn't necessarily accurate because 1800 isn't a massive sample if you consider that there are 60m people living in the UK. The results are still interesting though.

That was my thought too.

My BT broadband is far far slower than the implied 8mb and it's really frustrating.

NTL/Virgin Media 4mb down, 400 ish k up it hovers around 50kb/s up. it could well be 512k up but losses round it down to aroun 400,
however i do get pretty close to maxing out the download rate.

We shouldn't be concentrating on getting more people on our slow network of telephone and copper cables but rather our broadband companies should be upgrading our network to optical fibre.

The more money they spend on extending their coverage with phone and copper the more it'll cost them to upgrade the UK to optical fibre.

Plus, companies advertise relatively mouth watering speeds and provide something not so appealing. My Virgin Media/NTL 4MB service runs at just under 500kbps download - upload isn't worth mentioning tbh.

You're on a 4Megabit service, that works out to 500kilobytes per second.

4000/8 = 500.

You're fine.

I know. I wasn't complaining about my service - except for the upload which is poor on Virgin Media.

tru, 1800 is a small number to smaple but research suggests that even a small sample gives u a pretty good ballpark number

I'm on their 20mb service (768 up) and get around 100kb/sec upload speeds, even higher than 768k (and 2.4MB/sec downloads as well)
I'm guessing it depends on where you live, as a friend of mine on the other side of town is also on the 20mb and gets around 1.8MB/sec down and 70kb/sec up

Depends on where the people live that you're questioning. Ask 1,800 people in various towns/villages throughout Lincolnshire and I'm sure the percentage will be significantly lower.

I get about the same as you Tad, except my upload hits 140k.

The difference in speeds will be down to how many people are on each connection at one time

I'm on AOL and during the day it is ok at 5 meg but in the evenings they cap my speed to 0.5 meg. Wtf. They say ist because i have my internet connection active for too long. But hey, i leave my router on and that talks to the isp.

I hate AOL with a vengeance. I would get rid of it but my dad finds it easy to use as he is getting older.

Anyone else disgruntled with AOL?

Well the Northern Ireland one is bull, ask people outside of Belfast and virtually no-body has it, why well I am paying for BT 8mb because I needed a more than 8gb usage allowance, and the fact it's virtually the only broadband you can get in the coutnry side, and I'm only get 1/3rdmb, so Northern Ireland would be alot less, for the UK it would be reasonabley accurate though even though the smallish sample they used.

I'm on the same package, due to the fact my family are quite heavy internet users (internet radio, skype, youtube, game demos and of course bittorrent) we find ourselves throttled to a painfull 2048/192k speed most days
(the upload being the crippling part)

Can't even move to ADSL really, as our phone line is shockingly bad and can't stably go much faster than 2MB
