DDR3: Kingston and OCZ at 1333MHz
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/200...z_at_1333mhz/1
DDR3 is the new memory that you will need to take full advantage of upcoming chipsets featuring technologies like XMP and EPP. We grab some modules from Kingston and OCZ to see which is better if you feel the need to upgrade.

Thanks for this, I've been wondering if DDR3 is getting any closer to becoming worthwhile.
Shame you didn't do any DDR2 benchmarks for comparison though. I think that would really help demonstrate exactly the kind of difference that extra ~£200 makes. |

We did do DDR2 versus DDR3 benchmarks back when I did the original P35 article, however I will be doing another with identical X38 boards soon.

I must of missed something, or its too early to be reading anything. why is it that in the gaming performance section when the ocz ram is run at a higher frequency, the fps drops? did they loosen the timings and I just missed that somewhere?

Either that or two Maximii
Chris - I honestly dont know mate :| The timings were kept identical to the 1333MHz ones! Benchmarking in Vista is probably partly to blame. |

no wonder overclocking confuses me. higher speed=lower performance. Ok, where's my old p4 chip...

The price is still way too high to make it worth switching over. At this point I only see it being viable to those that have a huge bankroll and the need for the absolute latest technology. When the timings can be tightened along with the raise is speed and the price drops considerably it will be time to switch. I still see at least a good year or so before it becomes a good idea to switch, IMO. The new chipsets will have bugs to be worked out and the new DDR3 platform will hopefully be more affordable and offer better performance.
