Camera phone, k800i?
Hi all,
I might be going on holiday very shortly (8th october) and I don't have a camera. So considering that most cameras below £50-70 are crap anyway, and that having a semi-decent camera phone would cut down on what I had to carry, I figured I'd look into them. What's good right now? I'm moderately skint so the k800i seemed like a good idea, with perhaps an extra battery or a protable AA charger so the battery wouldn't be an issue. Are there better phones out there for that money or around that money though? Tips on where to buy from would be apreciated also. I'm using an el cheapo tesco mobile sim atm, and I'd quite like to keep it because of aforementioned skintness, but I wouldn't mind just going to an independant phone shop to pay the £10-15 that phone unlocking costs if it was worth it. Cheers alll. |

TBH, I would either get a not so good phone and a decent camera, or go for a camera phone that is amazing. The K800i has an okay camera, but personally I wouldn't buy it for that. If you want the absolute and are willing to spend a lot more, then the Nokia N95, which is probably the best phone on the market at the moment, is great. But, if you are looking for casual photography, I guess that the K800i would be just fine.

Thing is though, a decent camera is >£100 on its own, and tbh I almost never use a camera anyway. I don't imagine I've taken more then about 20-30 pics on the houses digicam this year, I only really feel I should have one since I'm goin' abroad. I'm not going anywhere near N95 expense tbh. Cheers though.

The K800i is a good alround performer tbh, nothing fantastic but nothing crap either

The K800i knocks the socks off most camera phones because it has a proper flash. For the price your not going to get anything to beat it yet.

Well, I just hit "confirm" for one off O2. I'll almost certainly have to take it down to an indie shop and get it unlocked for £5-10, but I paid £99.99 for the phone and got a 1GB memory card thrown in for the money, so it seems like it's the best deal out there. Also gonna pick up a second battery, since I'm guessing that Xenon flash kills battery quick. Cheers for the replies guys.

Not sure I'll have time before I go to polskiland, but if I havn't posted any here by the 18th or 19th of this month feel free to drop me a PM and I'll get some upped. AFAIK though the 810i is exactly the same camera and camera sofware as the 810i, the 810i just has some minor upgrades and a different casing.

£100 would get you a reasonable point and click camera with optical zoom not some digital zoom rubbish on a phone.

Well, got my phone delivered a couple of days ago.
In some ways it's great, the music player is the best I've seen on a phone, the camera is exactly what I was after (something compact and decent enough), the UI and navigation is really good. However, there are some really stupid things wrong with it. The phone isn't nearly customisable enough for one. It goes into a sleepmode mode after about 15 seconds, and that time isn't alterable anywhere I can find. The alarm function also seems determined to vibrate if it wants to. Most importantly though, the Sony Ericcson software that came with it nearly destroyed my PC. Twice. First time I installed the latest version from the net, it installed, I opened it, the program crashed and then my computer blue-screened briefly and restarted. At the same point in every boot sequence it would blue-screen and restart. I had to go into safemode and use a restore point (<3 restore) to get my computer back. Tried installing the disc version in case it was version specific or something, but it wasn't. So I have no computer software besides the very limited 3rd party stuff. That's fairly dissapointing because I'd have loved to have gotten my PC and my phone syncing automatically when in range etc. |

The sony software is typically crap and doesn't really work.
I don't use outlook so it doesn't really sync to anything at all. As for getting images off the memory card, it was easier to get a cheapo memory stick usb reader off ebay. However, I have since found this absolutely bitchin' piece of software, if you've got bluetooth on your pc, it syncs whenever you are in range of the thing, and you can send texts from your comp over the phone, and even answer the phone and use your headset to talk to people (I have never used this function). And best of all? It syncs your contacts!!!

I actually found FMA, but it didn't really seem good for much. I guess I'll have to poke around it some more. Am I missing many other features from the SE software? I was under the impression that there was a fair bit of stuff (remote etc.) that was SE software only? Do you know if it's possible to get rid of the network operator name at the top of the phones main screen btw?

As far as the operator logo goes, I don't know of any phone that lets you remove it

Mushky, I've got a phone now, I already knew that there were superior camera phones out there for much more money. I was time and money limited though. |
