Compulab releases DIY smartphone

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/10...y_smartphone/1

Compulab has stepped swankily into the DIY market with an ultra-cool smartphone which may be an excellent little side project for the modders out there.

Stop! -time!

I can also see something like that, with good dev support, becoming a good option for people developing all kinds of embedded devices. It leapt to the top of my list for a personal project I'm working on. A 500MHz XScale board for that money is very decent, quite apart from the other stuff it has onboard.

I just had a closer look on the price page and if you want ONE with LCD, keypad, battery, GSM and WiFi it would set you back 867,5$

122$ is the price for the bare board in 1k units with the 312mHz cpu. Would be nice to get one but its cheaper to buy a pocketPC and hack the hell out of it

Too bad it only has GPRS. It should have EDGE or HSDPA or UMTS or something a little better.

Then it might be worth the hefty price tag with the add-ons.

Oops.

I think someone's been regurgitating press releases without doing too much fact-checking...
