Scalextric...

Had a quick search and couldn't find a thread or posts on this forum... I am sure some of you know I am a keen petrol-head and this also includes a love for Scalextric, which is keenly shared by my 5yr old son.

Over the last 12 months or so we have built and extended our track in a small part of the attic, which was previously unused, as it is in the extended part of the house, away from the main attic.

I know everyone and kids these days are all about iPads and Snapchat, but does anyone else on the forum share the love for Scalextric?

Here are a few pics from the beginning days to today...

Nice track I like how its evolved.

The wife bought me a Scalextric set (well a whole stack of track and a couple of cars) a good few years ago now, but I only get it out now and again as I have no where it can stay set up...

Looking at your start point, I assume you're using the "digital" (multiple cars on a single track) set up? What cars do you have? Is that wooden blocks you've used to raise the track up?

Yep it is a digital track, so we can have up to 6 cars on the track at anyone time (the track shows the 4 port controller, but I have the 6 now), you can change lanes and we mainly play the pitstop game as the little man loves it.

Lots of cars, but only 7 that are digital at the moment, its gets very expensive if you convert all the cars to digital, average car cost is 30-40 and then add another 15 to make it digital.

All the track supports I made myself, the plastic or card ones sold by Scalextric are terrible. Didn't take me long (and cost half as much) to make them once I confirmed the correct height. Also made a few for the banked corners at the back of the track and the ramps up and down.

I bought a simple Batman: Dark Knight edition for myself and the kids, but they never really wanted to play it, so I gave it away.

My lovely Mrs bought me a set last year. It's an old school set from the 80's (the Knight Rider set) lol. I'm currently on the look out for more track and car as she's going to let me setup a layout in our loft. I had set when I was kid and loved it, but as it takes up so much room I was never allowed to use it very often.

I've seen recently there's all this hype about Digital etc and makes me wonder if I were to buy a digital set would I be able to run my Knight Rider KITT car on it ?

One thing I have found is the track I have currently isn't in the best condition and I'm wondering what the best way to clean it would be ?

Sounds like you can convert from the older style to digital for a fee of about 15 So i cant see why you wouldn't be able to run your KITT car on a digital set

Just like PC parts, eBay is a good starting place for additional track, it tends to sell for MUCH lower than its RRP... however its a bit of a mine field and I have purchased some track which frankly just is not usable.

Cleaning the track slots themselves, while needing some time and TLC is quite easy, its when the plastic is ageing and it begin to curl and bend it get harder. I've had zero success with this track when attempting the restore it back to being flat - it tends to respond to being weighed down, but slowly (with a couple of weeks) curls back.

Still I find buying a ton of track off eBay and picking the best of the bunch far cheaper than buying it new.

These are what I use for cleaning; http://www.scalextric-car.co.uk/Trac...ishing_Pad.htm

http://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/ are also the cheapest supplier of kit I have used when eBay was lacking.

Any track can be converted to digital. Basically the difference is how the power is delviered to the track..

With analogue you control the power to the car, using the trigger which increases and decreased the voltage applied to the track and in turn the cars.

With digital, 15 volts is pumped around the track all the time, the chip in the car then communicates with the base unit and the controller regulating the voltage delivered to the motor in-line with the triggers response.

There is also a small light sensor that can transmit signals to the track, enabling lane and pit changes.

You will note though, this means you can only run digital cars on a digital track - as pumping 15 volts to your 12volt analogue car will be unwise.

HOWEVER, if you get the Advanced 6 car base unit (http://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/p-...powerbase.aspx) you are able to change it from digital to analogue, enabling you to use your analogue cars on a digital layout - albeit without the ability to change lanes or use the pits.

Finally you can convert any car using one of these http://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/p-...sion-chip.aspx simple enough to fit with a soldering iron.

Thanks guys for the info. Will have a look on ebay and see what I can find. Looking forward to getting a decent track setup. I was rather stunned when the Mrs said it's something she'd play with too providing I find her a particular type of car in a certain colour lol.

What are setups like nowadays for keeping cars slotted. That last picture you've posted, BennieBoy, looks like a great track, but a right pita to retrieve a car that's come off the track at the far end due to lack of headroom.

Good observation! It was pita until a few design considerations. Firstly I run with N52 Magnetics in the back of the cars when using this track, to be honest only the really hardcore racers remove magnets these days.

Second, the design of the track is to have the track at the far end banked. Both the high rate crash points (at each hairpin) have a person in arms reach. The matt you see is where my son sits, what isnt shown in the picture is my chair, which is situated opposite the hairpin in the middle.

Third, there are three "holes" in the track for "easier" (Still pita) access to fixing track and car retrieval.

And finally, I have made a 2m telescopic pole with a huge magnet on the end, which reaches to almost every corner of the track from where I sit, enabling with a small reach to collect any way would crash.

PS> Forgot to mention, in Digital you have breaks also, so approaching slower corners at speed it easier than it used to be,

Our loft has plenty of standing room, I think. I haven't actually been up there as I erm, well I'm not very good at climbing ladders. We are planning on installing a proper loft ladder so I can get up there. Once there I'm looking at a table top solution rather than floor mounting, I really don't fancy sitting on the floor with my Arthritis.

The other idea I've had is to make a track in m PC room which goes round the walls on a shelf a a reasonable height but the room is a touch small for that so still working on that idea.

Defo I would go with standing if I had the space, I can stand in the attic, but there is a HUGE water tank in the way, can't yet justify the cost of going to a combi boiler just to move the track!!!

Here is a bit of some, on board camera of the SLR tonight. Shows how well it holds, considering it has a camera mounted on the side, it holds well even at speed.

Unedited, so you can see how it slips, managed to hold a few power slides around the hairpins too.
