After an 8800 GT? You Might Just Want to Wait a Little...

AMD's new offering of mid-range cards are here, and they look damn good for the price...

Nice find there. Hmm this, or a 8800 gt (when they get in stock) or wait and see if the rumoured super 8800 gt shows up....decisions decisions and so near chrimbo.

Performance seems to be very similar between the HD3870 and the 8800GT, and these cards run very cool ~40° compared to the 80 or so on the 8800GT. I think we have a winner!

(Especially as there's no stock anywhere for the 8800GT).

Oooh, interesting. I'm on an ATi at the moment (1900XT), it does surprisingly well at 1680x1050, but I can see it's starting to struggle just a bit with more recent games.

Not sure I should be spending money on gaming stuff when I have my dissertation to write this year though!

Ooo, naughty Bindi! I hope the swear box has been used (or maybe the cluebat)

What I want to know, is whether the Linux drivers are any good. Monitoring Phoronix to see what they think.

Roll on February... (my new build project will have finished by then )

Oh bugger.

http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=703

I've just ordered a BFG OC 8800GT off Amazon. Yes, its a pre-order, but its not price - gouged like everywhere else. £20 cheaper than OCUK.

Why is that review a bad thing? It's not conclusive proof, but it's pretty unsurprising that it's not quite as fast as the GT (according to them).

I love that graphic on the conclusions page though - that's some great stats manipulation to show an impressive gulf between the two.

Because I was under the impression that it was only slightly slower than the 8800GT (rather than 30% slower in a lot of applications).

Well, there might be hope yet - apparently they're using 7.10 rather than 7.11 for the drivers. I won't have to pay for the 8800GT I ordered until it dispatches in a week or two's time, so I have plenty of time to investigate HD3870 reviews.

Even so, why is it a bad thing you pre-ordered the faster card?

The only review I saw about the card was disappointing to say the least. The only advantage it had was less power usage. It was behind 7%-49% in games depending on the games. I hope they were using old drivers or something, because I thought there would finally be some competition to nVidia.

The very highest end of the graphics market doesn't signify anything. You may have missed the purpose and target consumers of these cards. Hint: look at the price and then deduce.
