Having problems producing graph

Hello I am trying to produce a graph of frequancy response for a filter and both excell and OO refuse to do a proper xaxis scale. The x axis values range from 1000 to 25000 and the y axis values from 0 to -45. I need a logrithmic scale on the xaxis but what happens is that I get a log scale but with only two values 1000 and 100,000 which is very silly! both OO and excell refuse to let me reduce the major and minor grid lines to lower values (they are on one and ten suprisingly). This is crazy can somone tell me what im doing or point me to some software which can produce a coherant graph of this data please:

not quite the shape like that but the orignal values at the bottom with the distance between each xvalue changed rather than changing the actual xvalues.

Now that's something I've never seen, either in Excel or on graphs in general.
Although I haven't seen all that many graphs.
