I have recently started this mod for my wife. The idea is that I use standard components but make the mod as thin as possible

I changed most of the red to black plexiglass and the front and back to clear plexi.
So after a trip to the local plastics supplier I got me some real goodness :D
    [IMG]

This is the general layout I am going for (picture taken from the top)

    The first piece
    [IMG]

    And with its polished edge
    [IMG]

So then I used a shiny new toy to do some serious modding
    [IMG]

I started making the mounting area for the PSU and its integrated fan cover
    [IMG]

    Mostly done
    [IMG]

    And the final star in
    [IMG]

    Psu in its place
    [IMG]

Next thing to be done will be to make the first major side panel. This will help position everything else in the case and keep the side stable while I measure it up. Hope to update soon ;)

I have changed the title of the thread since I don't think the original is appropiate, please choose a less offensive one. - Wonka :)

WoW! I really like ur fanhole design. stylish and soft . I assume u''ll be using it on other holes, right? only problem is that it can be too fragile? maybee go a bit thicker on holders?

I like the fan design too. I'm going to go dig my old spirograph kit from the attic now.
    Naming a project after a condition?!-That's not right!:D

great idea, maybe you should trim the sides of the optical drive to make it ever so thinner. The name kinda creeps me out though

I have been getting a lot of flak from my wife because of the name. Maybe I should change it  . I wouldn't mind calling it Thinner, after the Steven King novel, but this box won't be creepy. I can always call it bulimic... Does anyone have any suggestions for another name?

bulimic :hehe: that's so much less offensive than anorexia :hehe: maybe name it posh spice or paris hilton or nicole richie or calista flockhart or alley mcbeal or pick your fav skinny celebrity!

so how come you haven't used a riser to get the gfx card at 90" and how about at least rotating the drives & psu so the whole pc is as thin as possible?

I haven't found a riser yet, if you have any suggestions on where I can find one I would really appreciate it.

Rotating the optical drive is a bad idea. Not that I can't do it but my wife is not the best technically oriented person around and if I make her life difficult by putting the drive on its side, with the disc falling out everytime, I'm afraid I wont have very much of a mod left after she will be done with it (and myself for that matter - :eeek: :worried:)...

You could do with a slot loading optical drive then :)

A slot loading drive would work perfectly sideways. Listen to Just Jon!

Which one do you have in mind? I stay in South Africa, we dont get very many fancy loading drives here. If I want any Plextor drives I'll have to import it at great cost to me.

    How bout "Elegance"
Elegance is the attribute of being unusually effective and simple. It is frequently used as a standard of tastefulness, particularly in the areas of visual design and decoration. Elegant things exhibit refined grace and dignified propriety.

Or just name it as one of models of ur choice. :p like "Naomi" or something.

And regarding optical drive, i think that we pased that time when there was big difference beetween manufacturers. So Plextor is no-must. Just buy any slot drive that is available, im sure it will be fine.

Yep, you are right Samaya, slot loading drives are like rocking horse poo from what I can make out (by searching .co.za sites at least).

Maybe it would be easier to get hold of a slot load DVD RW drive from a laptop and convert it to work on 'standard' IDE? This would be even more slender.

Anyway, looking forward to the rest of this mod :)

I found this with a simple "pcie riser" in google :D
The other option is a low-profile card, i've seen stuff like 7300gt i think that was really thin, not even half height!

It might be a good idea to leave the dvd, psu & hdd wide, that way the thing has a base to be stable on, if it has to stand freely that is. Cool name lol :D

Ever seen the South park episode about Paris Hilton? They buy the "Stupid Spoiled W***e Playset" LOL .... But since it's for your wife, I wouldn't call it that though! LOL

    Nice work though!:thumb:
