Is it true that slim version has worst build quality(materials and stuff) than the phat version ?

Overall, it doesn't feel as solid, but that's because it's only 1/4 of the weight.
You don't get a pop-out DVD drive, it's just a plastic cover with a mechanical release.
However, it is much quieter, and doesn't suck up as much dust.

And you can hide it away somewhere as it's not as big as a breeze block.

Actually now I remember I did have one problem. When I plugged in the GH controller it pushed back the contacts for the controller port on the PS2 and the pins on the guitar meaning the player 1 port was busted as was the guitar. I think it was probably more down the the controller not being manufactured properly.

I had the phat version up until a week ago when i sold it, i NEVER had a single problem with it, and it was fine. Sure it was a bit louder than the slim but that's what the TV volume is for, isn't it? Actually a friend of mine fried his slim version, he was home alone and played for like 8 hours or something and it overheated and died, i always left my ps2 on (once for a whole weekend) and it was fine. I would think that though the slim is smaller, it is more fragile, and it might overheat if its on for an excessive amount of time... That's just my two cents but i have no real proof of this.

I have noticed no difference. The slim has an integrated ethernet port, but I don't think it can support the PS2 hard disk drive expansion.

I have a large version, back in 2002 or somewhere around there was when i got it. I've been unfortunate with mine, some dvd drive issue, had to send it in 3 times, but sony has been nice about it.

I had two fat PS2's along time ago, one died from being unable to read disks, and the other my parent accidentally kicked off the disk drive (lol!)
My slim one i've had for aaaaages, and its been left on constantly with full load before (playing Kingdom Hearts 2, hehe...) and no problems.

The slim wins hands down, its smaller, lighter and quieter.
    I love it. =P

I've had my fat PS2 since December 2000, one of the second batches in to the UK. Never had a problem with it (touch wood) and it's been used a lot, still being used almost daily though I have a 360 and a wii in the house at the moment.

I have a fat one, and have only ever had minor problems with it. Seeing as slims are so cheap to get new (150 here in Canada for console + 2 controllers and a game if I remember right), might as well go for a slim.

The strangest problem with my PS2 is that I can't play Guitar Hero 2 for some reason. It absolutely REFUSES to play it. Other then that, nothing, and I've had mine since launch.

It's probably the laser slowly going out of calibration - eventually it'll stop reading disks completely, unless you recalibrate it yourself, all you need is an oscilloscope... :D

That might be it, but what I find weird is that GH2 is the only game it doesn't play! Everything else runs fine!

Sounds like the trouble mine had, we tried about 4 Madagascar discs and it never played it.

I sold my fat ps2 with 2 controllers, memory card, about 30 games, and a regular xbox with 2 controllers for 150 bucks, with that 150 bucks, my ps3 cost me 150 bucks less. PS3 eats ps2 :) And it can play ps2 games :O Only problem with my ps3 is damn guitar hero, im stuck on hard, and i can't play co-op because the ps2 guitars dont work even with the ps2 to ps3 controller adapter, and they dont sell ps3 guitars unless i buy the bundle again which im not... Waaa

ok so ps2 slim sounds like an excellent buy. I basically want to buy it cause I want to play games like final fantasy and metal gear solid. Now I wonder if I should save some money for PS3 and get all the titles there plus MGS4 and the latest FF. But I heard that PS3 compatiblity with PS2 titles sucks (worse graphics...there was a video in youtube that compared the two).

Why does SONY make it so difficult for themselves, I don't understand. If they had great compatibility for PS2 games in PS3 I would definnetely save money for PS3 ..but now I'm not really sure what to do and PS3 isn't really worth it at the moment is it ? No exclusive titles, basically just mainstream games (racing, sports, some crappy arcade/shoot'em ups) that don't even take advantage the full potential of the console.

Btw, is it worth buying a PS3 without a HDTV ? I mean..I would buy one later but for now I would rather get the console first, I want to play Japanese games dammit!!!

Anyone knows if MGS4 is coming on PC ? (yeah right, dream on :D)

MGS4 will be ported all over the place, but not until it's been a PS3 exclusive for quite a while.

TBH if there's nothing on PS3 you desperately want atm, just get a PS2 and play all the awesome games for that for a couple of months, then it might be worth PS3 time. :D
