is it ok to tap power from a line will it change the performance of a drive???

Code:

                    5v to LEDs     ground to LEDs
                   /                   /
--------------/---------------/------------> ground to hard drive
------------/------------------------------> 5v (red) to hard drive

As long as you are connecting in paralell with the drive (onto +12 and +0) then you are fine.
