Microsoft were no help...
Hi there guys.
I bought a copy of OEM vista from you a couple of months back. Then about a month ago, my motherboard took a turn for the worst and i had to buy a replacement. Vista seemed to activate fine, which was good, but now it come up with 'Change of hardware detected' and is going to shut off in 2 days... When i rang microsoft and explained the problem they told me to talk to my reseller, you guys. Is there anything you can do to help? Many thanks

Sorry to jump in, but technically as you bought a new motherboard you have to buy a new OEM copy of Vista - that's the way it works and the risk you take to save your pennies.

They can sell you a new OEM version of Vista... That's what defines OEM, it comes with a system. Change the core parts, get a new licence...

If your motherboard was under warranty and you got a direct replacement that might be a different scenario and your CD key might still be valid (as I guess you could technically argue that it was the same board in principle).
Otherwise, Scan may be very nice and offer you a new key - don't count on it though, it isn't Scan's fault.

Phone up MS again, keep on trying - they'll let you activate it eventually (you just need to find the right rep).
This is nothing to do with Scan, they only sell you the box, they can't help.

Use telephone activation its automatic when it asks you questions about the copy tell it that the copy has been on no other PC and you should get a new code, worked fine for me with my OEM 32bit when I moved it from my PC to my laptop when I bought x64 for my PC.

Actually, As stated on Microsoft's website:
Users who run a Microsoft Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) operating system may upgrade or replace most of the hardware components on the computer and still maintain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software provided by the OEM, with the exception of an upgrade or a replacement of the motherboard. An upgrade or a replacement of the motherboard is considered to create a new personal computer. Therefore, Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect then a new computer is created, and a new operating system license is required. If the motherboard is replaced because of a defect, the user does not need to acquire a new operating system license for the computer. The motherboard replacement must be the same make and model, or the same manufacturer’s replacement or equivalent, as defined by that manufacturer’s warranty. The reason for this licensing rule primarily relates to the end-user license agreement (EULA) and the support of the software covered by that EULA. The EULA is a set of usage rights granted to the end-user by the computer manufacturer. The EULA relates only to rights for that software as installed on that particular computer. The System Builder is required to support the software on that individual computer. |
