Forget ISPs, your PC should snitch

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/02...hould_snitch/1

RIAA boss Cary Sherman would like to see anti-virus programs extended to scan for and prevent access to illicitly downloaded copyright materials on your PCs.

The RIAA doesn't care about that, only leeching as much money as possible for themselves... take this for example:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...sticks-writers
Quote:
THE RIAA has long held that its court actions against P2P pirates were all about protecting the creative work of musicians and song writers.

However its agenda became fairly obvious yesterday when the record labels within the RIAA all agreed with Yahoo, Apple and Napster to lower royalties to songwriters.

Its argument is that music studios have suffered much from the switch to traditional records to digital media and they need the extra money. It should be songwriters who pay for the expensive court cases and the losses sustained.

The debate is about the "mechanical royalty", which are payments made for copies of sound recordings and music.

The RIAA wants the Copyright Royalty Board to reduce the rate to eight per cent of wholesale revenue. Currently the cash to be split between publisher and songwriter is about nine cents per song, according to the Hollywood Reporter. µ

Thanks, I needed a reminder as to why I switched to linux!

Seriously, why shoudl AV manufacturers, or for that matter OS manufacturers piss off their customer base to pander to an industry that creates no revenue for them?

Whatever this guy is smoking, I want some.

Yeah at that point i'd just install linux. There'd be a distro out there that wouldn't have any filtering.

Also how would the software be able to tell the difference between personal rips and stuff distributed over the internet without adding a load of bloat to the file structure or inventing a whole new codec that no one would use.

You wouldn't have to install Linux, in 5 mins it would be circumvented by the hackers and we can all live happily ever after

Someone should make a timeline of all RIAA's stupid ideas, miserable failures, lost cases and outright insults to both musicians and listeners.

Stuff like this is important to document, so we can teach our kids in school to learn from past mistakes.

This just wouldn't work. It would require a new platform of bit torrent clients with this encryption built in. Current technology already circumvents this problem so why would people move to this crippled version of bit torrent. The RIAA really are idiots.

the riaa once again proofed that there are indeed humans that are less intelligent than a stone, now they just need to answer why they hire them in masses.

Oh, I see. If the RIAA has it its way, antivirus/antispyware software would become spyware itself!

What's next? Will they send an agent to every home and office to look over your shoulder, to make sure you are listening only to RIAA-approved-proprietary-encrypted-file-format on RIAA-approved hardware and software?

Agreeing with everyone else that's said it - If it crops up in Windows, I can see a mass migration to Linux. I'm not interested in spyware when it's free, let alone paying a company to give it me.

Besides, wouldn't it be easier to hook a linux box to your sound equipment and do your illegal on that, using a completely clean Windows/Mac environment with only legal music?

Bunch of colossal morons.
