The Club (PC)
http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/03/09/the_club_pc/1
When we looked at the console versions of The Club we had two thoughts. Firstly, that it was a love it or hate it type of game. Secondly, that it would play much better on the PC. Now, we find out if those predictions hold true by sending Andy in to have a second look at the PC port.

Greetings!
So, another half-done console port? PS: Freaky avatar!

Having played the demo I think the controls and feel on PC doesn't validate a 7.
I found it annoying and rather boring. There was no real intensity. The menus were awful as they kept referring to xbox buttons so I continually had to guess what to press. The concept is great but the execution is lacking. Why not have it as a first person shooter? Third person makes the game character block the view. I would expect to find a game like this in the sale bin costing around 5£ On a console I'd probably be more forgiving of the shortcomings seeing the history of 3rd person shooters on consoles but on a PC I find the gaming experience counter-intuitive. If the choice was between Team Fortress 2 and The Club I'd recommend TF2 without hesitation. Maybe it's the mouse-lag maybe it's something else. I guess it's as Andy says "a marmite game" that you either like or dislike so I highly recommend trying it out first at a store or a friends or by downloading the demo.

At the end of the day, though, there's really no difference between the console and the PC version. Because of that, it's still a marmite game.

I played the PC demo, and I didn't even finish the first level. It's a game where the gameplay is obviously the main selling point and you couldn't describe it as anything other than "clunky." As to the first poster, yes, it's a half-done port, and the review talks about the menus.
Of course, I don't see making a choice between this game and TF2. I'd see it as recommending this game and Max Payne, and I'd recommend MP in a heartbeat over this business. The only time there is a bit of non-linear movement is when your character enters a large room between hallways. Other than that it's one track, three feet wide, through the whole level. |
