Hard Drive Enclosures
after reading the Ten Minute Modding article I now want to buy a hard drive enclosure or two to shut up my drives. I have a WD1600JB (western digital 160GB) IDE and a WD3200JS (western digital 320GB) SATA and when my fans are throttled down they are pretty much the noisiest part of my system.
It would also be nice to cool them down a bit, but my main priority is to silence them. can you guys recommend any particular enclosures, and do you know where I can buy them (either in the UK or shipped here)? Thanks ashchap |

Look at the AluBox enclosures from A.C. Ryan. I have a Duo and the fan is quite quiet. The quality is excellent and the prices are really in-line with other enclosures. http://www.acryan.com/ and look under Pro Data section.

If your hard drives are all inside your case....
I have the Antec Solo case, it has sound damping material on each panels on on the top of the case. Perhaps purchasing such inexpensive material will help diminish fan and hard drive noise. Moreover, my case has the option to attach the hard drive with elastic/material bands so that hard drive floats, so when it vibrate it you don't hear it. It works very well, waaayy better than nothing, and better than using the silicon screws type of thing. I suggest maybe a possible case mode to make it possible. Specially that I don't think it cost much.

yeah, I looked at some of the AC ryan stuff and it looks good, but I cant find anywhere to buy it in the uk...
as far as elastic bands go, that might work but I move my case around a lot going back and forth between home and uni so I doubt they would hold up too well in transit |

Have a look at quietpc (www.quietpc.co.uk) they have various HDD silencing products that might be what you're after.

I too am looking at some internal (edit: I assume you are after an internal solution) hard drive sound proofing/cooling solutions.
As most of the noise from harddrives is just vibrations something like this http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/...cat=244&page=1 or this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=657361 would be an excelent way of quieting them down, obviously the latter does not provide any cooling, but I would say most hard drives do not need any extra coolig if they are mounted internally as the natural flow of the case should insure they dont sit in a hot pocket of air. Plus my case has meshed 5 1/4bay covers so air will get drawn in through them. |

thanks for the input guys, I've decided to take the cheap option and see how it goes - I've ordered the rubber mountings (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=657361), cant really go wrong for a fiver
