music playback oddities in vista

ever since i upgraded to sp1 of vista I've been getting a weird issue where the playback of songs dips in volume almost randomly as if some kind of peak limiter is turned on. as i type this its just lowered the volume for about 15 secs on a song after there was a particularly high note from the singer, but it didn't lower the volume when there was a really sharp high note from the guitar. it really hates the song miserlou, and is constantly dipping the volume at different points.
I'm currently using windows media player to play music but the same thing happens in winamp. I don't have the SRS wow thing turned on in wmp, and it effects the songs regardless if i have an equalizer on or not.

I used to have this issue in xp but far less frequently, and from what i remember it only effected a particular program, wimamp i think.
if anyone has any info on how to fix this problem I'd be really grateful as its a pretty damn annoying problem.

I'd be looking at sound card drivers given Vista's record in that area - but since you had the problem in XP as well, I'd be wondering more about the sound card itself, or the speakers. I'm guessing the songs do play fine sometimes?

In xp I was using a sound blaster pro and now I'm just using the on board as my sound blaster got fried. I was using the on board sound card before I upgraded to sp1 and it was fine so it seems sp1 has changed something. sadly with my current motherboard I cant fit a sound card in as it would block the cooler on the graphics card.
yeah sometimes the songs play fine, at the moment its playing perfectly fine, and has for about 30 minutes with the only difference being I'm playing an album rather than a play list of lots of different songs, but I doubt that is effecting it.

Maybe windows messed up installing drivers from its cd when I first installed vista? but then I didn't have a problem before sp1.
