Psychological warfare - help required
So my home is under attack. About 10 days ago we were invaded and despite several attempts to wipe out the suckas I have to admit I am struggling.
As it's if each I go on a killing spree they counter-attack with a ****ing spree and within 24hrs a whole load more of them have appeared. This is what they look like: (Best effort I can get currently, my macro capabilities are a bit wanting) Can you help me ID these muthas and work out the best strategy to exterminate them? They are of similar size and behaviour to fruit flies - i.e. generally they just sit there (on the wall, mostly in the corners). They're easier to squash than fruit flies, but fruit flies don't have the reproducing capabilities of these basturds. They have a slightly silky/furry appearance, like moths, but the wings seem more transparent than a moths, similar to a fly. They turned up after I brought some old sheets in from the shed to cover stuff with while I was painting a ceiling. I guess there must have been a whole load of eggs on one of the sheets. They're starting to drive me mad. They're generally confined to the bathroom but the door keeps getting left open and some get out. If I don't act soon to end this I fear the worst. Right now if I had access to nuclear weapons I would quite happily use them to see the end of these scum. Please help.

I gassed a bunch of fruit flies once, it obviously wasn't enough because after 15 minutes or so some started reviving and walking about. If these are any hardier, I don't think that nuke would even do it.
(Before anyone says, this was FOR SCIENCE in a controlled experiment. I don't go around killing innocent bugs for pleasure, as much as I would like to do so) |

Fly tape might work but really an exterminator is your best option (just incase they are nesty type bugs) check the shed for nest of some sort.
Maybe some type of gall gnat etc.

Insect Search
It's quite specific, but maybe will help to find out what it is. Barring that, maybe send a pic to a local collage and ask for help. Not knowing what they are might be a problem if try to gas them - might use wrong insecticide that makes them grow huge and become sentiant. then we all become white moth/fly slaves. /2cents

I think I may have worked it out. Moth/Drain Flies, otherwise known as, quite incredibly given my choice of thread title, Psychodidae.
We've had a partial blockage in the waste pipe for our bathroom toilet for a couple of months now which pumping with a plunger hasn't resolved. As such we've stopped using that toilet and I guess the lack of use enables colonisation of the standing water. I'm going to flush that loo every couple of hours for the next few days and see what happens to the numbers. None of you have actually helped, and yet you've all been inspirational. Bless you. I fight another day.

You could try a Bob Martin flea bomb? When our cat caught fleas we used a few of these in any rooms he had been sleeping in. Not sure if it would work on those fly things.

There are several broad-range formulations of insecticide designed for flying insects that will work over a prolonged period of time, and by the sounds of it these particular pests enjoy congregating in just a few areas. I would suggest seeking out one of these cans and giving their typical resting spots a good coating in addition to flushing out their nest, as it has worked for me on more than one occasion with several other pests I've had over the years. Hardware stores and several grocery stores generally carry a good variety of insecticide so they would be your first places to look, just make sure to get an aerosolized variety.

Maybe, but for now I'm going to bottom-out my hunch on them being moth flies, which seem to be aquatic=based breeders. I reckon if I get my toilet blockage sorted the problem should go away, so I've just ordered one of these:
... the catchily titled drain unblocker. Gagging.

No need for all-out chemical warfare. The bugs may sit on the walls, but breed in the toilet. Pour some bleach or boiling water in there, and job done.
Of course it also makes sense to unblock the toilet so you can, you know, actually use it again.

Could be a change of plan here. Toilet still needs unblocking, but now I think they're in the extractor flue above the shower. Maybe they've been in the loo too (thought I saw larvae in there the other day). But these ****as don't quit. Killed all I could see this avo, but apparently night is their active time and, waddya know, just had to kill a shed load more of them, and sure I saw at least two fly out of the extractor. Bathroom extractors that are vented via a flue in the loft are toss - steam always condenses in the cold weather and is presumably proving a breeding ground for my now sworn mortal enemy
