They're pretty consistently under a grand these days - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B000V5P90K ~$970 (and do use that affiliate link *cough* to buy one at that price! actually... go through bit shopping)

Soo... how about the 5dMkII. Aren't we supposed to be hearing about that any minute now?

Hmm. The battery capacity seems to have dropped significantly. The 30D does about 1000-1100 shots per charge. (Without flash and IS, that is)

The 50D will have an 18-200 IS as a kit. Look at the body in the upper right corner.

Why? What shot can you get with the 50D that you can't with your 40D? How would the 50D make you a better photographer?

Glad someone is there to force some perspective into me Answer is no, and no. i guess its just the E-peen and whoa! 15 megapixels (bigger number MUST mean better) factor .... Yeh i guess i have to become a better photographer way before i need/can justify a new body..

There are quite a few features the 50D offers which the 40D did not that would make the upgrade a worthwhile one. Micro adjustment, improved AF speed/accuracy, higher ISO capability with 4 levels of NR, improved LCD with live view AF, Auto vignetting&CA correction, improved HTP, and class leading resolution...it looks like a decent upgrade all around--specifically since it wasn't supposed to arrive for another 6mo. Anyhow, point was, while it will not automatically make one a better photographer, it sure offers a lot to help one let alone get better shots, but get better shots in the first place. IOW, without some of these new features, one may otherwise miss a shot. Overall it seems to me like a decent improvement--while not ground breaking it offers enough to show Canon is making an attempt to increase product specs, this coming 6mo's earlier than ever before (Thanks Nikon). Now I've got to keep my fingers crossed for more attractive releases.

Oh yeah, here's the 18-200

Forgot to include Digic 4, which offers gapless microlenses increasing the light gathering efficiency of each pixel (Higher ISO performance w/ less visible noise-- a 1-1.5 stop noise advantage).

Hands On

The 40D has barely been out for a year and there is already a replacement? That's a pretty fast lineup update...

This is being priced on D300 territory, so I'm curious how they would compare since most of the improvements seem to be made to match the D300 (LCD, lens adjustments)

This is clearly an answer to Nikons call. As previously stated the 50D is a full 6 months early--at least when being compared to previous xxD release time lines which were all replaced at the 1.5yr mark. Lets face it...Nikon has developed and released some very desirable equipment within the past year, its about time Canon made an effort to get back some of its shares and with the 50D (and hopefully a 5DII/7D) it will.

I have noticed less white lenses at the Olympics this year. It was still the majority, but not as much as it has been in the past. Either way, competition is good for us end users.
