MacBook Air to get Penryn chip

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/08...-penryn-chip/1

Rumours of a hardware refresh for Apple's MacBook Air line claim an upgrade to a faster Penryn-based Core 2 Duo and a hard drive boost, along with increased battery capacity.

Awesome, the rectangular Frisbee is going to be slightly more usable

I wonder how it'll affect its flight capabilities..

i still don't quite see where the Air fits in the mac range. It's not as powerful as the mac book pros, but not as portable as the macbook. the only thing i can see going for it is 'apple fanboys lap up any old sh*t steve jobs poos because it looks pretty'. (although i do concede the fact that steve jobs does have quite pretty poos)

the purpose of Air is to fit in an envolope and then carry a large bag with all the accessories.

even notebooks are getting Penryn..... my q6600 looks really out dated

You don't see the point of it, but I defy you to say you aren't drawn to it. I'm a total Apple sceptic, and even I am in awe of the beautiful silver sliver.

Being as come of the main features of the Air are portability and battery life (why else miis out on USB ports, DVD drive etc) then arguably this "upgrade" is actaully a downgrade. It gets hotter, the battery doesn't last as long, it has to be heavier to fit in a bigger batter etc.

If I were in the market for one, which I am not, then I would want one of the older ones.

Forgetting all the arguements for and against the air, this update can't be true - or atleast, not increasing speed and using extra wattage.

If you head over the to apple discussion boards, you'll notice that nearly every Air post is regarding overheating issues and core shut downs.

Unless they just keep it as a die shrink with no increase in performance, then they'll have to make the air thicker to fit in a better fan.

(Just my opinion on the rumour mill though)

I have had a Penryn in my Lappy since February.

In responce to the purpose of the Macbook Air, its apples net-top, it competes with the eee, wind etc (at least specs wise).

Because people who need a small, under-functioned laptop want to pay 4x more than the others . Don't get me wrong, it's a sexy piece of kit, but I'd much rather a Sony TX or Lenovo X300 any day.

to choose between x300 and Air, i'd go with x300, simply because it can fit in a envelope as well without an external DVD drive hanging around.

accessory for Air: USB hub, DVD drive, charger
accessory for x300: charger or put a bigger battery and don't need anything else
