There's a juicy rumour doing the rounds at the moment, that Gearbox Software is making the next Halo game for the Xbox 720.

the 360 isnt supposed to be replaced untill 2012 (im probably wrong but its not going to emerge for years) so i find it hard to get excited

That's only 4 years away, which would be enough time for a fairly polished launch title, don't you think?

2012 will probably be about the time I get an HDTV and a this-gen console, TBH.

I rather enjoyed all three Halo games and still play Halo 1 and 3 online, lots of fun. Here's hoping the next one will have an even better MP

Seems possible to me. In 4 years we will all be less fed up with Halo so a new incarnation would be timely in my opinion. I do hope that if they chose to take a new story line they at least include a part there were they let you know whatever happened to the chief after Halo 3. Don't wanna leave him floating there in limbo.

Gearbox co-developed the original Halo with Bungie. Maybe this means the next Halo game will be more like the original. I liked the first one because the story was simple, but enough to grab you. Halo 2 had too much. Way too many long cut scenes of useless story that wasn't even interesting. I have not played the single player for Halo 3 so I cannot comment on that.

At least we know it will remain true to Halo fans.

Well, I post around the Gearbox forums all the time, and I haven't heard anything like this. This must be VERY speculative if it hasn't even reached the home base.

The thing that started this rumor was a post by one of the Gearbox execs (I think it was either the president or studio head) on the Gearbox forums a very, very, long time again. I guess since OXM decided to mention it months after the fact it's resurfacing but yeah, if you weren't on the Gearbox forums a while ago when this all started then I guess you missed seeing it firsthand.
