Sony issues Vaio recall

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/09...-vaio-recall/1

Sony has issued a recall of several Vaio notebook models due to a "wiring problem" that can result in short-circuiting and localised overheating problems.

Sony says: you can't call it a recall, 'cause it's not. It's a "voluntary inspection programme".

Whenever I hear about a laptop recall, I always hear Sony's name.
I don't think I want to go near one of those.

Yup apple had some similar pyrotastic incidents relatively recently although I'm sure they were running Sony batteries.

like mrb_no1 said, you don't read this site enough. Last year, my mom's HP had a battery recall, so Sony/Apple's not alone.

Those recalls were due to problems with batteries supplied by Sony, IIRC...

My moms Dell had a battery recall a few years back as well... It happens to all of them every once in a while.

There was a fire a few years ago at the Jordanhill Campus of Strathclyde Uni where one building was burnt to the ground and it was suspected that the fire started in a locker where one student had left his Dell laptop. It was at the time where Dell (and a few other manufacturers) were having problems with their batteries severely overheating, I even recall seeing a You Tube clip of a Dell laptop catching fire during a Japanese conference - pretty spectacular.

I've used a TZ21/WNB laptop for over a year with no problems, including numerous instances of falling asleep whilst watching DVD's on it in bed and waking up in the early hours to find that it is still playing...

Not at all, atleast the company have the decency to recall them when finding a problem, they should have found it in the design stages of the laptop, but still, freatfull that they are doing somthing about it at their own expence.

Its such a pitty, a company that makes a descent game console can't produce a reputable and reasonably priced laptop....i think its a sign.
