Samsung SM2693HM 25.5" widescreen

Big widescreen monitors are becoming increasingly commonplace in today's market and, by that same rationale, so are TN+Film panels. Samsung marries to two concepts with its SyncMaster 2693HM monitor - we check it out to see if it's any good.

"The viewing angles are very ordinary with fairly epic colour inversion taking place at even moderate angles. " Nice statement. I for one am still on a 21" inch CRT, and still loving it. I got it for $80 Australian and it has great constrast, good colours (with calibration of course).

If you were looking at a flat screen for photography, you'd be looking at an XL20 LED or NEC's equivalent anyway.

Ugh people have been saying this rubbish since LCDs were first mass produced. TN panels are poor, but PVA aren't. I use TN screens at work and the colour inversion is annoying, but my 24" screens at home are dell 2408s, they suffer from no noticeable colour inversion and are far superior to any CRT I've used. LCDs were terrible when they were first put in to mass production, but they have improved a massive amount since that people can't honestly still be saying 'I'm waiting until they improve' because you think they're poor.

I can't stand using CRT monitors due to the headaches they give me. But people need to stop clinging on to the 'until LCDs get better' because they're already much better than CRTs outside of the most picky 'problems' such as 'input lag', that your average gamer convinces themselves that they are so good at gaming that they need a CRT (and an 8000DPI mouse ) to 'enhance' their performance because they're so unbelievably good already.

I have a 20" LG L206WTY and I have zero color inversion when viewing from the side. I have no clue what type of panel it uses though. But it has none of the issues that most people complain about LCDs. With a 2ms response time things stay sharp when in motion. I had a 17" Sammy with an 8ms response time before this one and the difference was incredible.

No, I understand what he means, I stayed with a CRT for years. For me, the cost of upgrading to LCD was the XL20 because I didn't want to compromise on colour. Standard gaming LCDs still aren't as good as a pro CRT in this respect, although this is my opinion and I'm open to having my mind changed.

i was so disappointed with my 19" SM 940BW, and kinda still am. I got used to it, then i got a Dell 2007WFP, on an IPS panel, and i dont think i could spend money on a TN+Film again, the image quality is SO much better on the dell.

what i'm waiting for, is a decently priced 24" 1920x1200 IPS based panel ~£350

Note to anyone considering buying that monitor, it does not come with the built in usb ports, they are optional and listed as so in the manual.

Um, the reason so many monitors are sticking with 1920x1200 most likely has little to do any choice on the vendors' parts. It's down to single-link DVI being most prevalent. To drive a higher resolution that isn't oddball[1], you need DVI-D or HDMI.

[1] "1915 x 1436" quoth Wikipedia - however that's pretty much an impossible resolution, as there are wide assumptions of of a 8-divisible strides for screen buffers.

The Iiyama ProLite E2607WS 26" (the HDMI one) can be had for about £280. I'd say thats a pretty direct competitor. Any opinions on which you'd chose?

I have read almost all LCD reviews on BT and in the 4 or 3 years there is not one LCD that was good in displaying colors. I switch regulary to a old CRT monitor to edit gradients and choosing the right colors because the Dell LCD's (E196FP made in 2005) I use are too "bright" on the normal viewing angle. I have to view it from below the tabletop to actually see the right color darkness.

Consider this if you are in the UK.

Best panel on the market right now 178º views. 5ms rs. Close to perfect color. Slightly smaller dot-pitch which is a thumbs up.
