Confirmed: Some ATI Radeon HD 4830s are gimped

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/10...s-are-gimped/1

We have received confirmation from AMD that some Radeon HD 4830 cards have less stream processors enabled than there should be.

On a more serious note: Ppl with no tech knowledge whatsoever aren't going to find this funny. How are they even going to hear about this?

Chances are they won't even notice. I shouldn't think there are many people buying graphics cards that aren't tech savvy - most will be coming with computers and then the OEMs will be sorting it out.

What interests me is... if these boards can have the eighth SIMD unlocked simply with a bios update - Would that in turn mean flashing the board with a 4850 bios would unlock all 10, enabling 4850-class performance for a lower price? (when the boards drop to rrp levels of course)

That used to happen all the time Vigilante, X800PRO going to X800XT IIRC. Same with the 9800 series. I used to have it done to my old 9800 PRO

As far as I'm aware, the 2 remaining SIMDs are 'locked down' on the 4830s, so you can't unlock the remaining two to make a 4850.

But is it worth it to get this instead of a 4850? Hopefully it is significantly less hot...

Given the current UK pricing and the reviews already circling the net there is not point in this card when compared to the HD4850.

At £20 less than the current pricing it may be worthwhile.
