Sony: PS3 browser is faster than IE7

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/10...ter-than-ie7/1

Sony has just improved the PlayStation 3s internet browser and claims that it is now faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7.

hooray! does this mean that BBC iPlayer should be supported now, or at very least, in the near future? I've read somewhere (probably TrustedReviews) that the only thing stopping iPlayer being supported on PS3 was the lack of Flash 9 support...

Have a look here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcintern...w_bigscre.html

PS: We're also working on bringing BBC iPlayer to Sony PS3, but we're not quite there yet as the PS3 uses a slightly older version of Flash which doesn't support some of the features used in our media player, and the very promising Flash 9 update now available on PS3 has some compatibility issues. Our Flash developers are working on it - stay tuned for updates.

Ah, I was remembering half of that exact quote actually!

Probably didn't help that I saw the news about the browser update after the iPlayer thingy...

Wish my broadband was fast enough to use iPlayer! Infernal internal wiring!

Jasio will become famous soon enough
While Sony's browser may be faster than IE (I think it's based on Opera?) ... it's not as user-friendly as any PC based browser. I use a KVM switch to keep a keyboard/mouse always plugged into my PS3 for browsing (and typing) but there is no 'mouse' pointer or anything. If you move your mouse if just toggles through the various buttons/options like you would on the normal PS3 controller. It's not as intuitive as one would like it to be. The hidden menu/address bar can also be a pain if you want to change pages quickly or wander through bookmarks of your favorite websites/daily reads.

While increased support (Flash 9) etc is all fine and dandy -- I wouldn't mind having a simple mouse pointer pop up when I plug in my mouse via USB. Heck, even offer a mouse using the PS3's analog stick, that'd be nifty.

it's based on netfont or netfront or something like that, not opera. and mine has a cursor with the analog stick, haven't tried using a mouse. my problem is not the speed of the browser, but how it complains about running out of memory. not that i really care, i run my PS3 to the computer monitor so i have no reason to be browsing on it.

Explorer.exe

The rest of the world is faster without it.

Ya, running out of memory is annoying. Happens alot with 6 windows open.

Of course console browsers can be faster than anything that can come out for the PC. There is one console, hundreds of processors and millions of hardware configurations that can be detrimential to any optimizations that can be done.

is it me or is it rather out of place to compare the ps3 to a pc?, I wonder how would sony's browser fare when it is placed on a PC, I feel headlines like these just fuel the rage between fanboys

That's like saying you can run faster than an amputee, though.
