AVG bug leaves Windows unbootable

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/11...s-unbootable/1

A bug in a signature update for AVG 7.5 and 8 has caused the anti-virus software to mistakenly classify a critical Windows system file as a Trojan horse.

AVG8 is, in my experience, crap. It's slower than 7.5, nags about getting this, that or the other program from Grisoft constantly with it's 'notifications'... has a fit if it can't find an internet connection and reports that the program is broken. All sorts of fun times to be had. It's given me false positives several times on files ranging from notepad.exe to game executables (the legit ones - interestingly it never flags up no-CD .exe files).

This news just gives me another reason not to use AVG ever again.

For users that don't have a second machine on which to download the fix, Grisoft recommends that they “contact their AVG reseller or ask a friend to download the information and fix tool for them.”
And what about people who only have one computer and hence cannot access the Internet at all? They would not have a clue what would be happening and could potentially fork out a fortune to pay someone to fix it, would they be reimbursed?

My point is, should a software company pay for damages on any computer they break and hence cost the user money? Saying that, if that was the case MS would be broke!

It's probably in the agreement you agree too when installing that if the software breaks your computer, it isn't the software companies fault.

I have AVG on 3 machines at home.. thankfully I turned off daily scanning and only scan once a blue moon. My lack of anti viral pro-activeness saved me from this 'anti virus - virus !' LOL!

I hear non stop complaints about AVG incompatibilities/stability issues/etc. Why do people still use it? I've been on Avast for several years and never the slightest problem ever.

I've Switched to Comodo's Internet Security App, and couldn't be happier.
Looks like I made the switch at the right time too...

the dayily Full scan should be turnd off at best its going to brake your hard disk from Over uses + every day its set to do an scan on boot up (after 12:00 i think) so pc turns into an Slow pc for 30 mins or so (depending on how many iles you have)

if the virus is on your pc in the first place its Very unlikey its going to be able to remove it if the real time scnner did not pick it up

no, it's a user-specific kind of software. i find it just as irrelevant on windows as on linux.

I stayed on V. 7.5 because 8 is a bloated b*tch. Why do companies insist on upgrading an app until it no longer runs? (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, NORTON!!!)

That really sucks.

A while back Kaspersky had an update and after it you needed to restart, but on 64bit versions of Vista there was a problem and you couldn't start windows. It would BSOD as soon as you logged in. Had to start in safe mode and disable/uninstall Kaspersky. Luckily just a few hours later they released a fix for it though. That was very scary though.
