[11/08] Odds Of Survival
When a ship is wrecked on the Cornish coast, the odds of survival for crew and cargo can be pretty bleak.
RMS Mulheim at Castle Zawn, between Sennen and Lands End. Launched in 1999, wrecked in 2003, this is what remains of the coaster. Pentax K100D f/3.5 1/45 sec ISO-200 -1 step 18mm ![]() Large Image More Pictures Last edited by Silver51; 24th Nov 2008 at 14:56. |

That's a great picture, I really like it.
For those who want to know a bit more, have a look here. ![]() Some nice photos in that set. I would think the engine will have been salvaged if it's not still in there... Not really a small bit of kit to go missing. Amazing how quickly the sea has totally ruined it too - I know it's not supposed to be sitting ashore, but even so.

Thanks.
I've added a shot of the engine and one from the bridge, starboard doorway. It wasn't really safe enough to go in, but you could see that the consoles had been salvaged some time ago. The ship was powered by a Deutz SBV8M628 8 cylinder, so this is either it minus the sump and rocker/air box, or one of the generators. The ship had a crew of six with only one person on duty at the time (about 4 in the morning.) The guy on watch was rendered unconscious by a fall from the bridge chair, leaving the ship powered with nobody behind the wheel. Not so bad in open water, but there's a lot of big rocks around Lands End. Completed PE Summary: RMS Mulheim |

Its a nice shot, don't get me wrong. But I would of loved to of seen more of the beach/sea in it. Just to give it a more sense of scale really.

It's a tricky thing to photograph. The light this month has been terrible, even stopped down there's not a lot of detail in the sky so you end up with lots of pale grey.
This one has the sea in it, with Longships lighthouse on the horizon. What you can't see is the rain which started as I arrived. The camera isn't wether sealed, so I had to hide it under my motorbike jacket while moving about the site. Didn't mind that so much, but there isn't any room in the camera bag for water proofs. By the time I'd ridden back to St.Ives, only my left foot was dry. ![]() Large Image |

Love the last shot of the engine - I assume the engine room wasn't complete anymore? How would you get something so big out of there?

The fore and aft bulkheads are pretty much intact but you can walk through the engine room with your feet on the beach. From the looks of things, the hull was single skin at this point.

2nd shot tells a much more vivid story. I really want to like it but I think the highlights are just too burned out. If you had detail in the sky (by either doing HDR or a simple combination of 2 exposures) it could become a very strong image.

Yeah, I know. It was overcast and misty the last couple of visits, the lighthouse even had their foghorn on when I took this. I had a go at HDR but there's not enough detail in the sky to make a difference.
I'll see if I can tweak the RAW file to get something out of the sky without breaking the image. |

Okay, recovered the sky from the raw file then merged the two images using the clone tool. If there's a better way of doing it I'd really love to know.

Absolutely gorgeous with the sky in there! Merge well done. Stick with that one. You've ended up with a brilliant result

In a layer mask you paint with black/grays to define transparency. It goes from 0-255 (visible->invisible). Learn to use layer masks. It's an invaluable tool in Photoshop.

Thanks, I'll have a play with that. The main reason for taking part in the PotM for me is it's a learning experience.
Oop, just realised that the title is missing the [11/08] and I can't see a way of changing it. |

I used a simplified method of layer masking for some shots recently. If both images are aligned already open both pictures. Select all of the dark pic and pasted it into the light picture. between the two create a level adjustment layer and link the dark image to it (think its Ctrl-g in elements or ctrl alt g in photoshop) then alt click on the white thumbnail next to the level adjustment, this is its layer mask and ctrl V to paste the dark image into this mask. it comes out grey scale as semi auto mask. Then you can add Gaussian blur to this to soften the mask but keep the blur to a 10 pixels to avoid a halo effect. It’s worked quite nicely for me in a few shots and its quite quick.
