My media PC. About 500gbs of space. AMD 3800+, 1gb ram (other stick died), 7900GT, Vista Ultimate.

Its been an awesome PC. I think it actually boots up faster then my Q6600 with 1/6th of the ram, go figure?

Then a shot of my whole setup.

wtf?? my imagehost has replaced my fileserver with creepy blue naked dudes

it's a little more civilized than last time i posted, but it still needs a bezel, a side panel, a hard drive cage, and a bunch of cable management.

Figured that if I can get this up and running and co-located in a datacentre I could save a few bucks rather than forking over $140 a month for server rentals.

Intel SR1300 1U chassis
Intel SE7501WV2 server board
2x Intel Xeon procs at 2.8Ghz.
73GB SCSI drive
2GB PC-3200 DDR RAM

Currently have Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition installed on it, but this Linux thing is driving me nuts. Ready to uninstall and install WS 2003 or maybe the 2008 Beta.
Also still need to do some hardware upgrades (another HDD for RAID; more RAM; etc.)
Depending on the game you're going to run you will get upto double the slots out of running it on Linux over Windows. Post a thread in Software and I'll give you some advice if I can, I know a fair bit about running game servers on Linux (it helps that my best friend is the MD of one of the biggest UK GSPs).

My main file server

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.0GHz
1GB DDR RAM
1 x Seagate 250GB
1 x Maxtor 80GB
1 x WD 80GB

Backup file server

Intel Celeron 2.4GHz
512MB DDR RAM
2 x Quantum Fireball 30GB in software RAID 0
1 x WD 40GB

And yes, that's string holding the drives up :P. An attempt at stopping the really bad vibrations from the WD drive. Kinda works.

HTPC is one to the left of the Xbox 360 Elite.. Atom based so low power consumption. Has 500gb HDD and a 500gb external WD Mybook. 50" Sony Bravia HDTV for viewing.

Runs Windows Media Center with Media Browser to make it all cover flow and gubbins.

I have 2 servers. Old one is running ubuntu server edition and the new one is running VMware ESXi. Old one is HP Proliant ML110 G1 (Very Old) with 3.12 TB Hard Drive. New server is Dell Poweredge 1800 with 3.3 TB Hard drive. Combined is about 6.4TB of hard drive space altogether

I'm putting together a closet server for myself at the moment based around a Dell Dimension 4600. I'm modifying and adding to it to turn it into a file and download server.

2x 1TB Caviar Green hard drives in -
2x Icybox 5.25"-3.5" SATA Hot swap bays
Additional 120mm fan in the front
P4 Northwood @ 3GHz
2GB DDR memory
Dell/ Intel board that came in the Dimension
350W Silent PSU
250GB IDE System disk
AcoustiPack sound proofing foam

What you think? It's going to run in my wardrobe 24/7 and be near silent. When the wardrobe door is closed you won't be able to hear it in the room. I'll stream movies from it to the rest of the house and it'll act as a download server too. What OS do you guys recommend for it? Should I put Linux on there or stick with XP? I want it to be totally headless, like my folding rigs, and run Logmein for remote desktop access.

It's basically a very low cost alternative to a good NAS, plus I want to be able to leave it on all the time downloading files.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I need a good but affordable PCI Raid controller. Hot swap capability preferable, but not essential. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!
