Zotac GeForce 9300 ITX - How small can you do it?

Hello fellow bit-techers.

As the new Zotac GeForce 9300 ITX got tested recently and it being the first mini-ITX to sport a full PCI-E x16 2.0 slot, I was thinking of how small you can get a case with this board.

Everything needs to be scrammed in the box... MoBo, gaming GFX, watercooling, HDD, PSU, DVD.

Here's what I was able to come up with. The 120.2 radiator is a little bit outside the box, with the tubing going back inside from there.

So how small would you be able to get this thing?

Quick and dirty ideas. Nothing has to be fancy and clean for this one.

SKP of the board can be found here >> http://www.robsinter.net/temp/zotac_gf9300itx_jrs77.skp <<

Have you tried mounting the board sideways?

I did a three minute mock-up with standard-components, if that answers your question

Let's see... You could lose the res top and just use a T-line, and that extra 120mm fan is overkill. Four 120 fans in such a tiny space?
Turn the radiator 90 degrees, move the HD in front of the mobo, and you might shave another inch off. (If the HD fits.)

The two holes in the back made me think it would be cool if you could carry it like a 6-pack

You could probably get away with only having the fans in the rad blowing air out of the case, with a few vents on the side which the exhaust fans would suck air in through. You could maybe try using a 2.5" laptop drive or an SSD to save a small amount of space, but drive capacity would suffer. Do you really need the optical drive? Sounds silly I know, but what do you really use it for? Installing games/software probably, but you could just an external enclosure for that. But if you truely need one in there, then a slim drive is as good as you can get. Try mounting that sideways. A wider box is better than a taller box I think.

I tried this using a low-profile cooler and got it down to a 190mm cube (but that's using a full size PSU and DVD drive)

Guys... I don't want to know, what I can do better. I can't afford to buy new hardware anyways... I'm eiger to know, what sort of setup you can come up with, that's even smaller then my approach. And watercooling is mandatory in this question.

smaller = less cubiq-cm/inch

Mine is 16000 cm³ (a x b x c)

@ bigsharn: How can you sqeeze a nVidia 260GTX in a 190mm cube?

I wouldn't use a graphics card in the rig... being the pain in the arse that I am, I'd use it with a Q6600 (yes, I'm a fanboy) for CS4... and the 9300 chip would accelerate it enough

lay the graphics card flat that's how i got a mine into a slim case

another one is server PSU? i'm trying to find a psu about 500W that is small.

i was thinking of doing the same thing but in the next 32nm shrink already have enough computers around.

Personally, I would give up on watercooling and mount the powersupply over the motherboard Sugo style.

probably a 450 is enough

i might look into it later i have a slim mATX with 9550 and 4850 + 1 HDD in a pretty slim case that runs fine with the 300W PSU that came with it, 450W should be good enough for what i have in mind next.

good multicore cpu + mITX +good graphics card + 2 SSD in raid 0

Well... I had exactly this idea first, but nothing to offer as a prize , why I didn't announced it as competition

i dont think people enter because of the prizes, its the fun of the design

You are just afraid of the competition

I made a very fast mockup inside a 20cm tube for the MNPCTech case design compo. It's wasteful with space though, so you can probably do better.

I think the biggest component you'll have to use for this rig is the PSU, so the design should be centered around that. The HX520 is 15x15x8,6 cm. Place that fan-down, use the back of the PSU as a mobo tray. Use a lexible PCIe x16 riser to fold the GPU to the side and tuck it under the 2cm that the mobo overhangs.
A good GPU (4870) is about 20cm long. This means there's a space of around 5x15x8,6 cm to place a thin 2x80mm rad + fans. The pump can be placed above the motherboard in an unpopulated spot, and 2,5" (1,8"?) SSD should just fit between the GPU and PSU. Add a slimline DVD drive between the mobo and PSU, and i think the whole thing should be possible in a 15x17x20 cm space.

That's 5100cm3

Ofcourse you'll need to add some extra space for cables and tubing, but without access to SKP at the moment i think this would be the best config...

The idea is to build a decent gaming-rig based on this Zotac-board in the smallest case possible.

decent = big CPU + big GFX-card

If you go small however, you don't have place for big coolers, so you opt for watercooling

Next try, ~ 12000cm³

I'm not happy with the idea of using a 9 cm flexible PCI-E riser, as some tests mentioned a noticable performance-loss using them. So I try and opt for attaching the GFX-card the usual way.

Here's just a quick layout that I mashed up when designing a gaming system based on the J&W MiniX motherboard...

The basic measurements for the case are, 275x225x155 which makes a total of 9590 cc...

The cpu is cooled with the Swiftech H20-120 Compact kit which saves some space and tubing...
