They sounded very relaxed before the trial and it looked quite good when half the charges had to be dropped so this is some kind of surprise... or not to be honest.

I actually hoped this trial would help opening some business people's eyes about why music/games/apps get pirated. Well...

Once again it goes to show that given enough money you can bend the law to your own purposes.

people are going to comment this anyway so let me get it out of the way to allow for some intelligent conversation:

Stupid capitalists! Curse those people for trying to make some money.
    People will always pirate
    Open source is free.
only idiots use torrents anyway, newsgroups forever.

OK. i think i've covered everything there.

This sets an interesting precedent - we'll see a lot of other site owners being prosecuted and losing now. As for whether media distributors are beginning to understand this whole digital thing, i think they honestly are. DRM on digital media files is slowly but surely going away, so for music at the very least we have no excuse. The new battlefield is movies and TV shows, though. DRM is extraordinarily strict on those, and the fact that different regions have wildly different broadcasting/release schedules means that a lot more will need to change in order to support a DRM-free distribution model.

this won't stick. They'll appeal and appeal and prolly will never spend a day in jail.

Accusing the website and the owners of being enablers is just as ludicrous as suing google over the same thing. I can search for torrents just as easily on Google. Does that mean they're going after them next? We all know how deep their pockets are. . .

hmmm...... expect more torrent sites and trackers to get the same jugdement soon and the website to be pulled, thats if the owners can be tracked.

i'm sure this wont really change anything though as the pirates always fine ways.... back to IRC then I guess as thats been going for decades and i've never seen a case brough to a IRC host.

Difference is, google indexes everything! TPB only "cares" about the stuff that infringes copyright.

Should they go to jail? Nah, but the whole copyright legal framework needs a massive shakeup and without that I believe they were against the letter of the law.

Yes, you can argue that Google could be sued for the same 'enabling' issue - but Google didn't call itself The Pirate Bay.

As much as I detest what's happened here, I always thought that a group calling itself The Pirate Bay claiming they didn't encourage or condone piracy was a bit... disingenuous.

DRM is going away? You mean, as in Sony DADC joining PCGA? :p

But I get your point. If only company's would learn from successful DRM models [for games] such as Steam. How you could create a good DRM model for movies I just don't see. Copy protection is a joke and by-passed within days usually.

    Greetings!
    Because freeloaders dont get caught?

Lets hope this decision helps in clarifying the grey zones of internet use/abuse and that, after the coming appeals, the decision stands.

How many get caught? I'd be surprised if it's anywhere near 5%.

    Anyways, press conference here.

Unless the US try to force their law on some other country like they did with AllOfMp3.com and Russia... :(

er, the US government had nothing to do with it. Copyright holds internationally; the record labels sued them.

Another great Internet cornerstone buried by corporate capitalism, I hope TPB finds someway to come back.

There are actually legal torrents on TPB as well. Home-made movies etc...
