About a year ago (9th Apr 2008), in the "please stop using the Dremel as a saw... " thread, Oclocker had the idea of creating a "pictorial guide" of tools . I thought this was a great idea but was too lazy at the time to make one. I do realize this is going to take a lot of time, but I'd really like to see such a guide / dictionary here on the forums, so here goes:

As of now, the tags are: "tools" and "dictionary". More suggestions are welcome!
I would also greatly appreciate any submissions of suitable tool images, texts, names and links!! (It takes a lot of time hunting down good images and links )

My sincere gratitude goes out to all of you who has contributed to this dictionary so far!!!!! With no further ado I give you..

Q: Ok, I would like to submit images to the dictionary, what do I do?

A: Post a reply containing the following:
1) A link to the original full size image, and the name of the tool. Remember, the tool in the picture must be easily recognizable as you scroll down the thread! (Try finding a tool in this dictionary only by looking at the pics.) Preferably, the pic should have single color background and a easy to read silhouette. Also, it's good if the original pic is large enough to make it "zoom-able".
2) [Optional] A 150 pixel tall thumbnail. <--- [Yes please, saves some time 'photoshopping'.]
3) [Optional] A short text describing the tool.
4) [Optional] One or more useful links.
5) [Optional] Accurate names of the tool in other languages.

Clamps and Vises


C-clamp

Clamps stuff. Usually smaller than their F-clamp siblings.


Corner clamp

Holds pieces at an angle to each other. 90 degree and adjustable types depicted.


Drill press clamp

Clamps your pieces to the drill press / mill table while you drill.


F-clamp

Clamps stuff. Usually larger than their C-clamp siblings.


Quick grip clamp

Great for clamping stuff together when you only have one hand free. If you need the stuff really tightly clamped, add F-clamps after the quick clamps (some (all?) quick clamps can't tighten their grip in small enough increments).


Spring (grip) clamp

Quick and easy clamping. ^_^


Vise (bench vise)
Skruvstycke

Holds or clamps a work piece while you work on it. Is usually bolted to a work bench.


Vise (drill press vise)
Borrskruvstycke

Holds or clamps a work piece while you drill into it. Is usually bolted/clamped to the table of a drill press.


Vise (machine vise)
Maskinskruvstycke

You usually find this kind of vises on mills (CNC). Holds or clamps a work piece while the machine works on it.


Vise grip (standard)

Holds stuff together. Used when welding for example.


Vise grip (C style)

Holds stuff together. Used when welding for example.


Vise grip (sheetmetal)

Holds stuff together. Used when welding for example.



Measuring


Square
Vinkelhake

Squares are very useful when drawing/scribing lines or aligning work pieces at 90° angles. Also useful for checking the perpendicularity of your cuts/work. The combination square (pic #2) also has a fixed 45° angle and the option of protractor (adjustable angle thingy in the middle) for any odd angle you need or want to measure. It also has the option of a centre square which helps you find the centre of any square or round object.


Steel ruler

Use it to measure, draw/scribe straight lines or as a guide when cutting with a hobby knife. Tip: If the ruler doesn't have cork on the flip side to prevent it from sliding, you can put some electricians adhesive tape on it to create a rubber surface with higher friction.



Miscellaneous


Air compressor
Kompressor

Drives pneumatic tools like air-brushes, grinders, sanders, hack saws, etc. Great for blowing away dust. Just make sure the air supplied is oil free, this goes for air brushing as well!


Angle grinder
Úhlová bruska, Winkelschleifer, Disqueuse, Smerigliatrice angolare, Haakse slijper, Vinkelsliper, Szlifierka kątowa, Rebarbadora, Kulmahiomakone, Vinkelslip

Use with a cutting disk (aka zip disk) to cut through thick metal quickly or with a grinding disk to grind through thick metal. very rough tool, gives really messy edges, but easy to use and quick.


Bending brake
Plåtbock

Used for bending sheet metal.


Bench grinder
Bänkslip

Makes lots of pretty sparks ¤_¤


Channel lock
Polygrip

For gripping round things like pipes.


Circle cutter

Put it in a drill press to make perfect holes.


Compressed Air

Can be found here
Great for cleaning dust from fans / heat sinks / radiators / grills.


Dremel (multi-tool)

Great tool for those small jobs. Not the best tool for long straight cuts though.

Drill
Bohrmaschine, Borrmaskin, Taladradora, Perceuse, Trapano, Boormachine, Wiertarka, Furadeira

Good for making holes and drilling out rivets with.


Drill press
Pelarborr

Great for making precision holes with.


File
Fil, Feile, Lima, Lime, Vijl, Pilnik

Always use a file to clean up your cuts!


Hammer
Hammare, Martillo, Vasara, Marteau, Hamar, Martello, Młotek, Martelo

The arch nemesis of your thumb. Not only a great tool for stress release, but it also *makes* things fit... (Cheapskate style)


Heat gun
Värmepistol

This tool can be used for shrinking heat shrink insulation/wrap/tubing or bending plastic (acrylic) sheets.


Hole saw
Hålsåg

Put in a drill press and use to cut perfect circles. buy one mandrel and multiple saws of different sizes.


Hot glue gun
Limpistol

Great for those quick jobs where the glue joint doesn't have to be super strong and wont be seen (hot glue can be messy).


Jointer
Rikthyvel

Squares the edge of a piece of rough lumber/board, prior to joining them edge-to-edge to produce wider boards for example.

Lathe
Svarv

Is used to create objects which has symmetry about an axis of rotation. Like cylindrical/conical case feet for example.


Mill
Fräs

Can be used as a drill press, but also to cut out parts from metal chunks (water blocks). Is usually equipped with an X-Y-table.


Needle file
Nålfil

Smaller version of the file. Great for filing details (like text/logo cutouts).


Nibbler

Great for making small square holes in sheet material. Do not use for long cuts, they will get jagged and your under arm and hand will be sore from the effort!


Nibbler (electrical)

This is quite a different tool compared to the manual nibbler. This one is better for making long cuts in sheet metal.


Paint Gun (power coating)

Used to paint metals... unsure about plastics or glass.


Riveter + rivet
Popnitstång + popnit

Install pop rivets to securely and tightly fasten two flat surfaces.


Router
Handöverfräs, fräs

Woodworking tool that is used to hollow out an area or shape an edge.


Router table
Fräsbord

Table for the router.


Screw Driver Set

Assorted collection of different sized Philips (cross head) and Flat head screw drivers.


Soldering iron / station
Lödkolv

Handy tool for soldering electronic circuits, or just hooking up leds for you mod.

Step drill / Unibit drill
Stegborr

Excellent for making different sized holes in sheet metal, w/o having to change drill bit. It can also chamfer the edge of the hole a bit for you.


Thickness planer

Trims a piece of wood to an even thickness.


Tin snips / Aviation snips
Plåtsax

For cutting sheet metal. There are three basic types; straight (usually yellow), left (usually red) and right (usually green) cutting. The left and right types does straight cuts as well.

Belt sander (hand held)
Bandslip

Use it when you want to sand away a lot of material quickly.


Belt/Disc sander
Band/skivslip

Good for sanding pieces at precise angles or for shaping convex edges (disc).


Disc sander

Good for making straight cuts. There are both "wood / sheet" and "metal bar" cutting types.

Coping saw

Use it for cutting intricate external designs, and some not-too-hard-to-reach internal ones (this is a manual equivalent of the scroll saw).


Fret saw

Use it for cutting intricate internal design (this is a manual equivalent of the scroll saw).


Hack saw

Use it to cut metal manually.


Jigsaw / Jig-saw

Useful tool for cutting any thickness of plexi/acrylic. Cheapskate recommends the table top kind (pic #3): "can cut whole sheets or do small cuts, and can't sag like the big saw."

Tap and die set
Gängsats

Contains tools for cutting threads in different sized holes and on rods.


Die

Cuts threads on cylinders/rods. Can also sometimes help save a screw with damaged threads (if not to severe).


Die holder / Die stock

Holds the thread die when you cut threads on a rod/cylinder.


Helicoil thread insert

Great for repairing damaged threads in soft materials like aluminium or plastics. Can also be inserted from scratch to make the threads stronger. This is useful when the screws are screwed in and out many times.


Tap

Cuts threads in holes.

Tap wrench holder

Holds the thread tap while you tap a hole. I usually drill a straight pilot hole through a piece of wood to help me get the thread started straight with the holder, then I back up, remove the wood guide, screw the thread tap in with my fingers only, and last I use the holder to cut to full depth. /Macros


Tap wrench (ratcheting)

Holds the thread tap while you tap a hole. Easier to use than the plain tap holder (above).


Tap wrench aligner

Holds the thread tap straight while you tap a hole. Perfect straight threads every time (if you believe the sales pitch).


Thread inserts

Great for making stronger threads in softer materials like plastics. Use in screw holes where the screws are going to be unscrewed many times (like on case side panels on an all plexi case).

Got a new idea, what do you think?
What if we included names for the tools in other languages as well? Perhaps in smaller font under the english name. This way you can search the thread for the name of the tool in your native language, and if it's in the dictionary you save some time.
Something like this (though, with a bit more serious text and links):

I've heard that with tile saws it's good to use a dull blade for cutting acrylic. True?

For thin aluminum(1/8") or any plastic I use a cordless drill if I can. For thicker aluminum/steel you really have to take your time doing half turn then 1/4 turn back etc.. With plenty of lubricant.
