Day 3&4

Thanks. Sympathies about the weather from here too. (And gimmie my rain back!)

-I cut out a blank to make the last bits I need for the frame.

-I drilled some holes very close to the edge to mount this to the CNC mill. I'm using the cheap screws they put in miniblind mounting kits. They aren't long enough to go through the 3/4" plank I added to the mill, and I have millions of them.

-I have to set the 'home' position on this machine manually, so I start the program with the axes wound out to their maximum.

-After that I have to set the machine to get the origin point on the material and the CAM file to line up. I'm using the point of a countersink bit again; just like I did with my drillpress 'mill'.

-and away we go... 2500rpm, 7 inches per minute feed, one hour thirty minutes of sitting on the floor.

-I'm cutting the edge parts out first here because I had to take a wild stab at how thick the material was. I didn't know how well it would hold up and really didn't want it coming apart as I was cutting.

-This process wastes a lot of material. I wasted even more. I forgot to check my clearance on the Y axis and ended up crashing. When you crash the machine slips and loses track of where it should be. The part at the top with a big X through it was the part that crashed. The rest of the parts on the top row cut OK. I ran into problems when the the new position parts met the old ones. I cut out the bottom left so the part above it could be cut.

-Anatomy of my first crash.

-I got my hands on a pair of calipers before I started day 2. Things went much smoother. I surfaced the wood block. It left a nice edge I can use to align the parts on.

-I cut out the last bit I needed with an accurate measurement of the thickness. The plexi was .228. I cut down to .225. I'm s l o w l y working the rust out of my technique.

-And until next time, I'll leave you with some squirrel porn.

Truly, one of the more often maligned pornographic industries.

Thanks.

I noticed the 4 short bits I cut are wrong. They need to be long enough to fit over three layers of plexi. The part I drew out fits one. I'm making loads of mistakes this early in?

I so badly wish I could afford to put my ideas into projects, lol. Unfortunately I'm a poor college student and it isn't an option, so instead I have to read other peoples project logs and dream about one day making my own
I like the look though mate, one of my concept drawings has a drive bay mounted pretty similar to that. Mine has a locking mechanism so that you can push the top of the tray, and the CD drive slides up to give access, so I'm excited to see what you will do with this!

Too err is human, to really mess things up requires CNC.

Persevere young man. We watch. Oh, try to stay out of the heat!

@Sixfoot - Oh! I have to figure out what I need to do with the drive bays! I need to break down and order more plexi too. You reminded me I have NO 1/4" plexi for that. If I have extra, I can make more mistakes.
@John - I'm pressure washing today, mowing tomorrow. I spend more time under the hose than the grass.
@skreen - I have trees. I wanted to take a pic of the perfect puffy clouds, but I realized that the only way to see the sky at my house is to look straight up.

Same for my house.
You can only really see sky if you're on the roof and looking up.

so? It's 100F degrees at your house and a heat index of 104F and you go to the roof? Me, I'd go to the air conditioned places. It's 91F and full sun here and I'm liking that the yard is drying out but now it's too hot! Keep your heat down there pls.

@Skeenname- I like how the house is completely black in that pic. I'm ruthless with the pruning, but 40 trees... and the reason there's sky in that shot is because that's where the tree that was just cut down used to be.
@John- I'm not on any roof! I got caught in a surprise downpour yesterday! I was thinking it felt nice, then the lightning started up. My neighborhood is still dry.
@Murtoz - Good eye! The name is kinda sounding gay now. Any ideas for a new name are welcome. If I can defile the name of a cartoon character, it will be perfect. I went with that name because glassgreen turns up a million Coke bottle hits.

I ordered more p'glass. Goodbye $130... So I've purchased 3/4 of a full sheet of 1/4" and 1/8" for one project.

Awesome, Cheaps. I really like the res location too. Man, that thing's going to weigh a ton. Looks like a PA rad in the Sketchup design; did you go contrary to your name finally on the hardware purchase?

This should be fun! Good luck with the build, man.

You assume I've bought hardware? All hardware is still just a gleam in my eye.

-Wait. I take that back. I DID buy the screws to mount the side panels. Does that count as hardware?

This one is already $2600 contrary to my name.
