Yeah, it's really a reddish brown but I needed to get it that dark to get a good shot of the sky.

Cheapskate, when you smooth out your acrylic's edges, do you sand and polish, or use thermal methods? I am loving the look of this design. It looks like it'll have an architectural skyscraper look to it. Can't wait to see the results!

Thanks guys.
![]() @bfelda - Sandpaper and a bench buffer, baby! The Bloo log goes into details somewhere. This log will too eventually. ![]() I've been going in circles this week. -Typical rough start material... ![]() -MISTAKE 1: That set of spacers I made were too short. I forgot to figure in 2 layers of plastic somehow. ![]() -I quickly cranked out a new set. I marked the hell out of them so my feeble brain could tell they were different. ![]() -Here's how the spacers were supposed to fit. ![]() -The first set of parts had a lot of material to remove. I used my handy 90 degree sanding jig and 150 grit paper. ![]() -You can't have a cheapskate log with out the painful backgrounds. I have the rough sanded parts here. They should be visible through the pink glare.![]() -I put them together using solvent glue. ![]() -BIG MISTAKE 2: Now that I had all that done. I went back into the computer model and noticed I had missed something important... I didn't add the length of the frame to the overall length, so everything I made on the CNC machine up to this point is useless. ![]() -Thankfully, it's almost no effort to make new parts now. I switched to one of my old 1/8" bits for this set of parts. The loss is close to what I would have with a dremel now. - maybe less. ![]() -This is why you start in the middle. I got the Z height set a little low this time, and it's cutting through the paper. I had to hold the parts down with a toothbrush during the last pass of the cutter. If I had started at the ends it would have cut the material almost free from the clamps.

I'm currently running all over town watering yards. I'm coding for cuts when I get home at night, Then I cut while I'm eating lunch.
If I could use the computer on the toilet, I could get even more done!

Do like mankz, buy laptops and netbooks and use them in the toilet so you have 100% of your day on the computer

jewfro!I can't wait for him to recover from the swineherpes and find this. We love you, Mankz, but your porn collection shows up on Google Maps! ![]() -I cut a test piece out of some scrap to see if the measurements on the Sketchup Hard drive model were any good. They work quite well. The CAM software I'm using doesn't act right with nested cutting operations, so this part ended up as a test to see if I could use multiple files to cut one part. I can. ![]() -I promptly broke it to see if the final part would clear when compressed. It needed some tweaks. ![]() -Somewhere in this mess I have some 1/4" polycarbonate/Lexan screwed into the machine for the final parts. ![]() -Today I cut out a second set. Right as I was finishing that up the UUps truck came. ![]() -Remember how I said E-plastics was expensive, but packed to Milspec? Here's the box, layer one... ![]() -Under the tape you find that layer one is glued shut around layer two. There's one inch cardboard spacers on the top and bottom. ![]() -Anyway, I have more plastic now. Here's the test fit of the finished hard drive latches... That I don't have an enclosure designed for yet... and I don't know if they will fit in the case model yet.

Oh Wait... wrong log. That's some nice plexi! I like the hd latching device, and I think in the first post you should edit crazy to cwazy! I continue to be amazed at the small size of that cnc whenever I see it up close. It appears barely bigger than that keyboard!

Yes. I have more cardboard now.
The secret to why the Ghetto mod died is out.@Modminded - I'd have to change my avatar to Elmer Fudd- and do the whole log like that. It isn't very big, but it has some nice features. If this setup is taking up so much space, imagine what the 2'x3' table router would have been like.

As you know, I'd been thinking of making a tablestyle cnc device, but space is a concern. You get some great stuff out of that, for sure! I'll be hitting you up for tips later on exporting from sketchup to tool path files, someday. ![]()

Cheapskate, this is turing out to be one awesome mod. I am really looking forward to seeing the pieces get together. Question about the polycarbonite drive clips, are you at all concerned about them cracking eventually? I never thought of polycarbonite to be a flexible material like how you are using it.
