I have been umm'ing and ahh'ing all week over my next mobile phone upgrade. I had a Nokia N95 on o2, and the contract is up on it. I wanted to go with the iPhone but I really like the idea of the Android OS so decided to go with a HTC Hero. I have read some pretty good reviews of it, and it gets delivered tomorrow. Anyone using Android and want to share any tips/tricks? I am also interested in any decent applications that you guys may know about? Thanks in advance
i use a HTC Magic and love it to bit's. Depending on your plan i would get the following apps for it right away. 3g Watchdog (a must to make sure you don't go over your data plan) Ringdoid (Awesome ringtone app for making mp3's into ringtones) And any updates to the google software (maps, etc) BTW i run the HTC Hero Rom on my Magic and love it. Congrats on the new phone and enjoy.
Thanks LCDGuy. I will only really be using the WiFi connection for net browsing etc, as I have wireless at home and work. We also have free WiFi at uni too. I will get that 3g watchdog though, thanks for the tip, as it will come in handy just in case I want to do some browsing while on the move. That Ringdoid sounds handy too, I have had the same MP3 files for my ringtone for years now, so it's nice to know I can keep my favourite on the new phone. Good to hear you like the Hero ROM and I will no doubt be messing around for the best part of tomorrow on the phone
the thing i love about ring droid is it allows you to take a section of an mp3 and then set it as your default ringtone without going into the sound settings on the phone.
HTC Hero = WIN Does USB teathering out the box, the app store is great. Had mine for about 2 months now and have not regretted it once. Apps I use are: (£) means a paid for app. BeyondPod (£) - Podcast/rss aggrigator Barcode Scanner - does what it says on the tin Buka (£) - Really cool game ConnectBot - SSH client that supports a soft keyboard (just double tap the screen) CrystalLight (£) - Tower defence game Facebook - does what it says on the tin Google Sky Map - Shows you the constellations in the sky where you are, a good bit of Augmented reality. Layer - The BEST AR app going IMHO Listen - Podcast player SMSBackUp - Free app to back up your SMS/MMS to your gmail account TwidroidPRO (£) - Twitter client. Free version also available. Wifi Tracker - Great for mapping hostspot locations. Can export data as KML's for google earth or as Kismit ready files Wikitude - Another AR app that grabs data from Wikipedia. Spotify (£) - The app is free but need a premium account to use, Music Streaming service. Out of all of these I use spotify dailly would be lost without it. If you have any must have apps I'd be interested in knowing about them.
Wow, SMS Backup works perfectly! I got a Samsung Galaxy a few days ago and it's fantastic A few more apps to recommend: Qik - live video sharing from your phone. It's a bit gimmicky but incredibly cool at the same time. It had about 10seconds lag for me. beebPlayer - BBC iPlayer for Android gFlash - uses the camera flash as a torch (rather than just putting a white picture on the screen, though obviously won't work on a Hero) Nimbuzz - IM client for everything
Simply put, the Hero is an incredible device, and was made better with the recent firmware upgrade. I have some apps i can add: Facebook- Speaks for it's self really. JogTracker 1.0- Tracks your movments on GPS and adds it to a google map, which you can upload onto the web. GPS Status- Gives you information on your GPS. 3gtest- It's like speedtest.net, but for mobile devices. Bubble- A handy app that doesn't really need an entire advert (cue apple) but is a spirit level. London Tube Status- Gives information on the London Underground. My Train Times Lite- Allows you to search for trains between stations. NetCounter- Tallys up your usage on both wifi and 3g/hsdpa. Sam
I love mine to bits. Some more app and all free ones as there are no payed ones in finland yet: Games: Abduction - My favourite right now Chess Droid mini golf Jelix lite - very ggod game Phit droid Bonzai Blast Apps: AndExplorer - file explorer AndFTP Contacts2Sim DroidLive Lite - streaming Folding@Home Stats Spare Parts - excess hidden system settings Video Player
i just managed to nab a hero on my new contract, looking forward to getting my hands on it come thursday
I've been considering a move from WinCE to Andriod but had heard the interface has performance issues at the moment and in all likely hood recent updates have been designed with the Snapdragon CPU in mind. How are you all finding its performance?
Performance was annoying originally on my hero but I upgraded the firmware when they released a new one and its awesome now. No lag everything is so much smoother. You should definitely get one.
I got the phone with no problems last week, and have tried out most of your suggestions guys, so thanks The phone is a little beaut, and is a lot smaller in the flesh than I imagined. I have been enjoying messing around with it, and have only come across one problem with it. It wouldn't put calls through last night, until I switched it off and then back on. Apart from that it's been plain sailing. Regards performance, the phone only seems slow on power up, but once it's up and running it is very snappy. It's a lot quicker starting apps than my N95 was. There are some very cool apps available too so I am well chuffed with the phone, especially as I managed to get an extra 400 minutes more than my old contract allowance for the same price a month too
ok i just got mine yesterday and coor blimey guv! ive not been one ffor phones but jumping from an LG viewty to this is one hell of a leap. i love it
Ive had my hero for a few months and i cant say a bad thing about it. One thing is to check you ahve the latest firmware. I had to flash mine, and it made the phone even faster.
I've got firmware 1.5 loaded, i think the latest is 2.something, i cant find a uk link for it tho edit: being lazy, found it, odd htc tells me its not for my phone, bah -_-
This is the one you want unless you have a phone from orange http://www.htc.com/uk/supportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=671 The serial number you need is under the battery
