I'm going to reply to this thread again to voice my concerns regarding this ad. Like Techno-Dann, I've noticed that the ad pops-up every time I come to Bit-Tech, and it's getting somewhat annoying.

After I voiced my concerns above, I made a mental note the next time it came up. The introductory text doesn't make it very clear that this is an ad. In fact, the text gives the impression that this is a Bit-Tech-sponsored survey.

However, what I find even more upsetting is the fact that RTT is the only admin to respond to this thread, but only to state that it is an ad and that he thinks Bing sucks. I'm surprised because the admins here generally are very good about responding to the users' feedback. I guess they're too busy moderating the Demotivational thread.

What I don't appreciate is that I went through the survey thinking that it was helping Bit-tech in some way. If it said "advertisement" I would have ignored it.

This ad really is getting annoying now, pops up everytime now. What makes it worse is that it leads you to think it is to help us and bit-tech.

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier - I've been ludicrously busy recently. I agree that it's annoying and I've expressed my feelings. Other than that, I don't know much about it to be honest - I'm not involved in any ad deals to ensure that the editorial team is independent. However, when I asked when it was ending I was told that it should be very soon (a few days).

I'm not an admin any longer; I'm just a plain old moderator (of which I do very little) - my opinions/replies are my own and should not be considered a 'bit-tech response' or official, or indeed anything along those lines

Ah, that's good to know. Now that you mention it, I do recall reading something to that effect in the past, but it must have slipped my mind.

Thanks for the information, Tim.

Glad to see that the survery ad with Bit-Tech logo and no mention that it's an ad is annoying the mod staff as well.

Maybe your complaint will weigh more than ours.

Yup, now I regret doing this survey. Save a damn cookie, or just remove the stupid thing. Your going to loose more members than whatever cheque Microsoft is giving you is worth...

Or have you already worked those numbers and the money comes out on top?

+1 to the annoyance. Sure I wasn't *forced* to do it, but I saw the prize and thought it was helping BT so went for it and it has really pissed me off. Please, this is as bad as those crappy Intelli-Text (whatever) adverts or a pop up - you have to actively do something to it to be able to read the stuff you came here to read.

When I clicked "yes" to take the survey, it asked me to save a .dll file on my PC.

Is this normal? Using Opera, BTW.

Same here. There is no way i'm going to let a survey run code on my machine.

On a deeper level, is whatever M$ is paying you guys worth alienating your customer base? Tim, I respect that marketing is separate from editorials, and I appreciate that, but does anybody from marketing read the forums? Does it matter?

You can probably imagine the amount editorial is shouting at marketing right now, on a daily basis, because it pisses us off too.

This survey has now been taken down as the staff has complained so much. Rest assured that if we'd known about it being planned before hand then we would have raised those complaints earlier.

I have asked for this on several occasions because I think it's just as important to have a relationship (of sorts) with the ad team as it is with the ed team - ad quality is just as important as editorial quality, in my opinion - but it's not something I can enforce. In the past, I believe the readers had a good relationship with the ad team via Hiren, who is unfortunately not really involved in the process any more.

It's a shame, because the editorial team (and in particular me/Alex, as Editor/Group Editor) are left to handle any complaints when we're technically not responsible for them - we're not involved in the sales process at all in order to maintain our editorial independence/integrity.
