Casinos as folding / distributed computing centers

I was in the local Indian casino last night looking for my drunk customer and looked at the hundreds of video slot machines on the floor. It was as Wednesday night and only perhaps 10% of them were being used while the rest sat idle. I'm not sure what kind of hardware is in these, but probably a midrange CPU with integrated graphics. Still, several hundred of them running 24/7 is a fair chunk of computing power that could be put to use. Software security would be an issue, but one that could probably be overcome.

Just a random thought.

Mobile phones are more powerful, from experience these machines use hardware barely able to run the games on the machine let alone anything else.

The absolute last thing you want is a gambling machine downloading third-party binaries from the internet and running 'em on the main CPU.

Ok, maybe a bad idea, but an idea none the less.

"Seems like it should be useful for something" is one of my favorite thinking errors
