[FM] Hovermax

This is the worklog of my entree in the Enermax Crazy Twister competition. A quit simple assignment; make something crazy with an Enermax fan.
Well, I decided to give my PC some extra airflow from the top of the case and make it look like a stealth plane

First I made some designes in SketchUp, using the geometry of the Enermax Magma 120mm [UCMA12] and the Enermax Cluster 80mm [UCCL8].

(i'm posting the log in a few chunks, just to keep you occupied )

Looks nice so far...

I reckon you need to mae the entire thing out of carbon fibre, have a dozen of those enermax fans at the bottom and make it live up to it's name

Here are the two "victims", who were provided by my good friends from Space Promotion.

This is the position I want them to stand.

For body I use my favorite material called Vikureen, also know as polystyreen.
It's so easy to use, just measure; make a shallow cut....

..and the cut follows the lines perfectly.

The top of the microtower is 370 x 180 mm (14.5" x 7"), so thats the size of the mod.

The size of the fans dictated the cuts I made here.

Here you can see the SketchUp drawing and the mod in front of it.

I cut a larger hole in the top, to let the air in.

The smaller fan will provide an exhaust airflow.

For that reason I cut holes in front of the small fan and underneath the large one.

Wow! These fan are very easy to disassemble! What a great idea from Enermax !
I found it was very easy also to get the fans painted.

I painted them metallic silver.

After assembly I stuck the Enermax decall back on to it.

This is the large fan now, looks good !

And with just 7 Volt, it spins like a cat and looks very posh

The angle of the fan is fixed, so this piece will make that solid.

After the construction-glue was cured, I can slide it in very easy.

And there it is.

Sideview.

The fan on the back sucks hot air from the case, so it gets a duct.

Other side, with more polystyreen added.

Now a tricky part, a rudder ! The Vikureen is just 2 mm thick.

Added a tiny little hinge.

And here is the connecting piece.

The main hinges I made from simple ear-swap sticks.

With glue, curing for a while.

This is how it should function.

Straight....

...to the left...

..and to the right. It works !

Oops. I forgot to spraypaint the back, quickly corrected.

And now with mounted rudder.

Lights please !

Oooh shiny logo !

I spraypainted the rear of the duct in dull black, to get a little more contrast.

These will form the air intakes of the stealthplane.

Had some ACRyan mesh left, very nice material to cover the intakes.

Hmmm, that cable sticks out too far, I better get it inside.

There, thats much better.

For finishing I used a technique called "kit-bashing". From redundant plastic scale models ( planes, cars and boats ) I use small parts to add more detail to the mod.

Some can be very tiny

Nice... you just gave me an idea of what material to use if I decide to change my case.

Great start there sir. Gonna be watching out for this one.

With filler I filled the largest cracks.

More details added, I think it will look very nice when its done.

This hinge part was damaged...

So I better stick something over it, to conceal it

More detail added.

Just use my imagination to stick it on.

Fastened the wings, ready to paint.

Primer coats.

Lovely work Frenky, maybe you should create some-sort of lines between the large parts.
So it looks like sheet-metal with the parts welded on..

I know what you mean. I've seen a SciFi model last week, with fake panels and rivets painted on. It looked really good. The model was silver-metal colored though, and my color scheme is egg-shade black. Stealth planes have no rivets and panels, it stealth-i-ness wouldnt work I guess.
Thanx for thinking though!

OT ( Hey Jos, can you fix your pictures in your worklogs? )

Nice, but the greebles look weird. It's either too much or not enough, I can't figure out the scale of the model. Oh, while you're at it, please close this cockpit....

Adding egg-shell black to the mod.

And here is the end result;

The contest voting starts tomorrow, Im really eager to see what the others have made!

I hope you liked reading this worklog as much as I have enjoyed making it.

Looking great! I totally see why you didn't add the panel-look. This looks great as it is.

It seems you forgot to paint the back of the big fan, but this gives it a special effect.

I'm probably starting a new log soon, those builds aren't really impressive, the last one was destroyed in a fire while it wasn't even finished..
