12GB DDR3 RAM or 6GB?

I'm planning an upgrade soon and was wondering whether it's worth getting 12GB ram?

My upgrade will be an i920 (maybe 930 is I wait til the New Year) with an Asus P6TD Deluxe.

12GB Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800 (1600) is £218.64 at Scan.co.uk
6GB of the same flavour is £139.29.

But the 12GB is CAS 9 whereas 6GB is CAS 7.

I want to use the ram in triple channel mode.

The extra £80 in price is ok with me as I kinda budgeted for it anyway. But if it's totally not worth while, I'd rather not spend it.

My PC is primarily used for games such as Eve Online (3 clients), WoW (1 client) and CoD4. I don't do any intensive video/photo editing etc, nor do I plan to.

Does anyone else use 12GB or is it really total overkill?

Thanks

12gb is currently overkill for gaming. 6gb is perfectly fine.

Go check how much RAM you use now; my guess is that you won't even come close to 6GB.

12GB is only useful if you actually know you can use it and need it; Kyocera's right in that architects would find it useful, as well as hardcore CAD or modeling people. Even the most RAM-hungry games out today will probably not use 6GB.

With xfire, winamp, utorrent, msn and Crysis running I still don't use anywhere close to 6GB of RAM.

12GB no question.

if you have the money, why not install the most amount of RAM?

i have been sitting on 8GB of RAM since 2007, and loving it, eagerly waiting for 4GB sticks to come out so that i could have 16GB. if you have the money, go for it.

install RAMdisk on it, and watch your games load faster than you can say holy sh*t

But what do you use it all for? And what % of the time are you using more than 4GB/6GB? There's no point having it if you're not going to use it.

It's like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Mushkin released their new BlackLine series, 4GB DDR3-modules with 1600MHz and 7-7-7-20 timings.

I am speaking for right now and for his needs as he has told.
I think buying ram for a pc now thinking 10 years or 3 years ahead is moronic.

In performance terms yes, but in practical terms absolutely not.

would this answer your question?

idle: ~4GB all the time due to 1.88GB of RAMdisk. if you go with 6GB, try switch on a game and with only 2GB of free memory, you'd be very limited. get 12GB and you'll be able to have 5GB of RAMdisk for any game you happen to want to load ultra-fast. then you still have 7GB of RAM to use.

thanks, Andersen1337. i'll be looking into those Mushkin BlackLine's.
edit: not on sale yet, can't find a price......

Yeah, I saw it over on Sweclockers, the article just said they will be available soon, no pricing tho as you mentioned. Checked a bunch of forums, would be a nice addition to my workstation/renderrig.
