What's all the fuss about Deus Ex anyways? I remember playing the demo of it in the first half of the decade and all i remember is that the controls were so awful i didnt even bother going past the first room. Did i miss out on something good?

YES!

You can pick it up for a fiver on Steam, so you have no excuses. I know it looks awful. I know it feels clunky throughout the training and that the first level will feel very difficult and overwhelming - but get it and stick with it at least until you get to the aeroplane (fourth or fifth mission).

Also, I presume this thread is following on from my column in the backpage? If so, keep an eye on the front page - I've got a feature following on from similar lines in the works.

Well... okay then. I just grabbed it on Steam. I could use a challenge anyways, i've been neglecting my retro library lately.

Joe, single handedly trying to make sure everyone in the world owns a copy of Deus Ex...

Well, that's 10 euros wasted. The game is so dark that i can't see a thing and the brightness adjustment goes from totally dark to "normal", no option to make it brighter. Running it in windowed mode helps that, but then my character starts moving super fast and all the dialogs skip themselves after the first sentence so i can't even complete the training.

Running Win7 on an old CRT by the way.

Can you not increase the brightness/contrast on your monitor?

Here, Let Me Google That For You

And find an app that easily allows tweaks to run the game on hardware it has problems with, along with a tweak guide.

Nope, it's all maxed out.

The game is extremely dark

If you're playing windowed, try switching to fullscreen mode.
Uhh... well that doesn't help.

I'll just attribute this problem to the fact that i have an old faded CRT. But still, i have no such problems with any of my other old games. I can just increase the in-game brightness. Ah well, i'll try that app sometime. It'll probably fix the superspeed in windowed mode and then i can play on my desktop brightness settings.

It's also odd that RivaTuner doesn't work with this particular game.

Alternatively, if you're feeling brave, you could open your CRT (I'd wait about 24 hours for the charge to disipate) and then find the appropriate variable resistor that controls the brightness.

I started replaying the game before i read this issue since a friend saw it second hand for £2. It runs fine on both his laptop and my desktop with no issues whatsoever =/.

Fraid I have to own up to being a non-completist also... Bought it years ago on the Sold Out label, got stuck on the first level and gave up. I like to think I have more of an appreciation of gameplay over graphics these days though, might be time for a reinstall.

The first level is weird. It's really hard the first time you play it and seems a bit badly put together. Once you push through it and learn the basics though, you can replay that level at least five or six completely different ways.

I'm another one who got pissed off with the beginning of Deus Ex and shelved it.
After a quick hunt around, I can't see it anywhere, my little bruv prolly nicked it.

I'm going to try Freespace 2 from GOG.com, it had better be good Barry Hutler!
