SmartData gave me all the computer parts but the mobo. Thank you guys!

    All acrylic by "Macedo Plasticos".

BioStar gave me the TPower i55.

These guys provided me the brass inserts

Once again i want to thank these peopl to help me achieve the first prize in extreme modding in the brazilian version of the Campus Party!

    About the project:
Hades means "invisible" and it's the name of the greek god of the underworld. This name came to my mind because i used smoked acrylic and when the lights are turned off it looks like a complete black case.

    Just a Teaser:

    Initially 78 acrylic pieces.

Your acrylic work is amazing. The broken side panel is not good, I also had a big accident with a acrylic part, i didn't find words at this moment.

    Thanks folks!

Well, the broken dragon will be recovered... just not for this project. I am thinking in making a desk stand sculpture or somefing like that... not sure yet.

Anyway, I willl put in this worklog. But for now, I replaced the side panel with a simple one.

I know.. I have been a long time away. That's because my personal life was a mess last year.

But here I am again with some nice updates that I think you guys will like

And don't bother looking for the "beallstudio.com" link. It is dead for 6 months now.

    Stuctural Blocks

To support the main structure I've made some acrylic blocks from a 20mm thick sheet. They are 20x20x60mm. Here they are rough:

    Sand... Sand... Sand...

Here are they sanded with 120, 220 and 400. Although there are no example in this photo, they were sanded down to 800 grit before polishing.

This polishing wheel is 1/2 HP. The right disc (flanel) is where we use the polishing wax made of carnauba. The other one is made of cotton to take the wax out and give the final polishing.

    Polishing... polishing... polishing...

    Final result:
If you look very closely you will find some scratches. But these pieces are structural only and they are going to be inside the case, so theres not much need to be perfect.

    INSERTS MARK I

Because the project was very different in the way it was to be supported I still didn't knew for sure how would the case behave. Because of this I could not glue it nor use screws directely on the acrylic.

So I went for the first dry-fit.

I didn't want to risk the acrylic blocks, so I've made some out of alu with the same dimensions. This PVC sheet with the markings A and B (upside down) were used as templates for drilling the holes.

The problem was that even the best of the M3 tap drill they break a LOT in aluminun.

Because I was really pissed of wasting so much money on that kind of drill the solution was to make my own brass inserts out of regular screws.
First I drilled some holes in a hardwood, tapped with a 1/4in drill (if my memory doesn't fail me) and in each hole I made a slit.

    Them inserted the screws...

"Beheaded" every screw, made slits on each one, punched the center and drilled a hole to use the M3 tap drill. Much easier in brass than in alu.

    And this was the result:
    [IMG][IMG]
    [IMG][IMG]
I was happy with the test result... But I need 60 of them withou the losses. My problem wasn't the time consuming task, but the wasted material because of those terrible power tools I have to count on. The drill press have some hard time trying to keep the hole in the center of the piece even if the piece to be drilled was puched with the chrome vanadium puncher. This made me waste like 4 in each 10 pieces.

    That was making me crazy!

But the solution came later from the guys in "Rudolph Fixações". Stay tunned.

    Yay! Yemerich is back.:D
I see part of the problem. From what little I know about brass... When you center punch it like that, it makes that spot harder than the surrounding brass. A drill bit will prefer to slip over it and dig into the softer material to one side.

-But you got the problem fixed already.:D

I've never even thought of making my own brass inserts. Interesting idea. I have just always bought mine from a local hardware store. I'm going to have to keep this idea in the back of my head.

I actually already recovered the acrylic dragon. I am trying now to fix the problem that made its scales too "light". You see, this is "smoked" acrylic. If we hold it against the light we should be able to see through it. But unfortunately, this is a poor quality acrylic. It is much harder to give it a nice and clean polished look.

I actually can´t recommend making them on your own. It is really time consuming and it doesn´t pay off. The industrialized ones are MUCH better. Too bad for me that at least here where I live is REALLY hard to get.

    NOW WITH THE GOOD NEWS!

Nah it is not related to this mod.

This year, there will be a Campus Party in San Francisco! There is a minimum chance for me to go there and meet some of our fellow modders at the event!

Perhaps we can share a Heineken or better yet an Erdinger :D

    Cheers!
