You're playing it on a Wii.
That's your problem.

Could it be an unstable overclock maybe?

I know some game can be quite sensitive to overclocking (Crysis)

Try lowering down to stock settings. Other then that, I have no idea.

Interesting that it should crash only when you try to hack; the minigame isn't exactly demanding on hardware. If I had to guess I'd say driver issue--some graphical effect that's crashing.

Need more info to be sure: is there a stop message displayed when it bluescreens? Have you checked error logs?

You could also try simply updating/reinstalling video drivers.

Have you patched the game or are you running it as per loaded from the disk?

First time I played it crashed on me as soon as I tried to run it and the patch fixed it and it works brilliantly. I'm playing it again as a female Shepard and I think its actually better.

Does Steam update non Steam games in the same way it updates games like Half Life, Portal, L4D, TF2, etc, etc?

Usually: Yes.

If it's a non-Valve game you're free to patch it yourself anyway, just turn off the auto update function via the 'Properties' tab so Steam won't verify the integrity of the game cache. Then you can do whatever you want to the files, Steam won't interfere. I've modded Titan Quest I got via Steam to hell, a thing Steam didn't like that much until I turned off the auto updater.

Also try to run Mass Effect as Administrator. Can't confirm this myself, but for a friend who had problems running the game via Steam it did wonders.
