Ok class... a couple modding math formulas to remember:
Cold symptoms + sleep deprivation = momentary lapse of concentration momentary lapse of concentration + high-speed buffing wheel = bent fin! ![]() I guess one bent fin out of 24 aint bad lol. Luckily I had extras cut!

At least it didn't end up sticking out of your leg. Has happened to me also, several times.
I'm glad to not have suffered any injuries. Next fin please, mod on.

Momentary lapse of concentration - angle grinder jumps off aluminum and skates "lightly" across forearm.
I got it cleaned up and bandaged and kept going. Bring on the fins!

The last little bits are falling into place.
![]() Had to supplement the A700's exhaust venting, since my new base pretty much enclosed the factory outlet. Here's how it originally exited the unit. The back cover had a matching opening over the black grill area. But now the hot air would just be blowing into the base. ![]() So an air duct would have to be made to direct the hot air towards the fins and out. So I mocked it up with some construction paper and transferred its shape to some roof flashing and cut it out. ![]() Then I marked the folds and bent them down using spare box tubing and my vise. A block of wood was used to put even pressure over the bending area. ![]() The box tubing provided a nice sharp, straight edge over which to bend. ![]() Top half is done. ![]() Added a bottom to it and riveted them together. ![]() Finished piece. ![]() Finished piece fastened to the A700. ![]() This, in addition to a separate heat shield I'm making to go over the projector, should help keep the temps at an acceptable level inside the base.

Thanks John, yes it's time to wrap this thing up!
So how does one paint something in 40º wet rainy weather and no paint booth? Answer: hang some plastic sheeting around a space heater and a heat lamp! ![]() Here's the base taped off and hanging, ready to prime. ![]() After a couple coats of black primer. ![]() Shooting the gloss coat after wet-sanding with 400 grit. ![]() While that was drying, I turned my attention towards the heat shield. Got it cut, bent, and edges filed so I could test it for fit once the base was dry. ![]() Got the base mounted to the A700 this morning and did a smoke test. ![]() An iris-downed shot of the projected image. It's a bit blurry because the Sensei is sitting too close to the wall and it won't focus that close. Also, the date's wrong (should be today). ![]() I'll post up final pics later today. 'til then!

Brought Sensei in to the conference room at my work place to take final shots. Enjoy!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'd like to thank everyone who helped me throughout this project: Moddersmart, Crucial, Pacific Waterjet, and especially to Lenovo for having the contest and providing me with one of their cool products to mod!

That is such an obvious and brilliant idea that I'm surprised no one else has ever thought about it. Should be produced commercially, really.

Found a shot of Sensei on display at Lenovo's area inside the Venetian at CES (thanks to Charles from TBCS for taking the picture!) At least I now have proof it physically made it there in one piece. Shame they couldn't get the projector to work.
![]() Spotted the edge of Sensei in this video interview of the contest winner, James Fislar. ![]() <Come on James, move out of the way, you're blocking the shot! lol >

My camera crapped out so I didn't take a single photo of anything. It might have been a good thing that they didn't turn Sensei on because people were allowed to do whatever they wanted to the displayed mods. Dean's Arcade dock was played almost continuously taking a serious beating from the crowd. I joked that he would have made a fortune if he had a coin slot working with it.
Lenovo did a good job talking up the mods and were genuinely proud to be displaying them. A lot of people got to see them and we all spent a lot of time talking to the crowd about case modding in general. Lenovo seemed to be pleased with the result and indicated that they would be interested in doing more of this in the future. Sensei looked great! Much bigger than I expected. Unfortunately, Dean's Arcade dock was a huge hit and our mods sadly sat on either side of it. LOL |

I think this is a great adaptation and I can see that it would be a worthwhile presentation/teaching aid. I’m surprised it hasn't gained more attention, but like some brilliant ideas, acceptance may be slow until consumers figure out what they're missing. You did a really nice job.
I do have one suggestion when you & Lenovo go into production – your idea for the piano hinge would have been an improvement. I realize that you didn’t have time to create and incorporate a mounting brace, though. Still an overall win on this mod. |
