Is my Q6600 sulking?

I noticed MrGumby saying this on another post:

My Q6600 @ stock 2.4GHz only does about 2.5k to 3k ppd using SMP client

I figure I am not getting the best out of it? Could I have said something to upset it? Has it realised it has rivals for my affections?

It is currently running P6701 (R167, C32, G3) worth 3826pts and HFM claiming 2683ppd - that's 24/7 running with generally over 90% of the CPU's attention.

Any comments welcome!

That does seem low
I was getting 2-2.5k on my e6600 when I was running it.

Have you tried running it at 3.2?

I DID try overclocking it a few months ago, but it became unstable. The cores are around 68 to 73 celsius. The air cooler is effin useless though and sounds too loud - running at around 3700rpm. I seemed to recall summat in CPC about overclocking this chip, but I cannot remember which issue

I also looked at database on overclock.net and there was only single entry for Q6600 at 2.4GHz and that was 4k ppd. According to CPU-Z, it is plodding along on 266.9MHz bus on x9 multiplier, it is a B3 rev chip with 1.208V core. It is sat in a Foxconn P35A01 mobo.

B3s do run hotter than the GO that i use. I have my cpu under a titan fenrir. Make sure your ram is set to the correct voltage and that its running to its full potential.

I didn't realise you were just down the road in "Wakey", I used to live in Normanton for years!

What's the 'right' voltage & full potential? Sounds like the sort of stuff teachers used to say to me at school! (Well, not the voltage thing ...)

It is 2GB of DDR2 DRAM freq 333.7MHz FSB : DRAM 4:5. Would have to go into BIOS to see much more that that. There are a load of timings too - in order 5,5,5,15,36. It is OCZ26671024V max BW 5300 (333MHz) at 1.8V allegedly - didn't appreciate all that was in CPU-Z!

I mean that you go into the bios and make sure your memory modules are set to theier correct voltage. This depends on the make and model of the ram. Also instead of running 9x266 try a different memory divider depends on the speed of your ram.

And yes wakey is as shakey as ever although i live in ossett these days

Father-in-law lives in Ossett. Will check up in BIOS in a bit ...

i have an i7 920 and my ppd drops from about 16k to around 9-10k when running P6701.

it could be that the project is a 'big' one. what ppd's do you get on other projects?

By default HFM only uses the last three time intervals to do its calculations. Are you sure there were no background tasks running - antivirus scans etc. - during that period?

Are all the cores running flat out in Task Manager? Is that 90% something you set in config?

I could ask for OS and client version, though I doubt they would cause such a big difference. Good practice though.

I have installed client 6.30 and set smp advmethods and big flags. It has started again on P6701 Run 167, Clone 32 and Gen 3 so will get a fair comparison. btw, I have persuaded the whippet to walk a little faster in't 'leccy generating wheel, so have cranked up the CPU from 2400MHz to 2519MHz!

You can find some details of the projects here. P6701 seems to have lots of atoms, but a rather low credit.

If you really wanted to, you could avoid being given them by omitting the -big flag once this unit is completed and returned. Stanford's policy is that if you keep missing deadlines, you should stop running those units, but otherwise they never comment on the credits for individual projects. No doubt projects will get larger and larger over time, and have shorter deadlines.

All of the PPD numbers you report seem a little low. Have you benchmarked your machine? I accidentally run mine with the memory configured in single, rather then dual, slot configuration. It makes a noticeable difference.
