It'll be interesting to see who fills this position, Dirk presided over some of the best and worst times at AMD.

What they mean is "Oh crap, Intel are creaming us. Time to find a scapegoat!", rather than say "Hey, we're not doing so well. Maybe we should, you know, develop something better?"

I don't think its anything to do with scapegoat or lack of strategy. Dirk put everything into the company and really turned it round. I bet its more down to hes the only member of the boardroom that wouldn't sell up in a take over bid. A few years ago I heard rumors (from an unreliable source mind) that the people they spun GloFlo off to where looking at a possible takeover. Why sack your savior? (wellok, the Jews did crucify theirs)

Global Foundries and Buying ATi were a great move, AMD has made great strides in the laptop market and mobile gaming. I think bringing in someone who is MORE aggressive in the Marketing and Requisitioning of market share is what AMD needs now......and a Product that can really compete with Intel would help as well.

AMD should be even more dominate and the favorite among Hardware manufactures because of AMD' cheaper prices but Intel still holds a large margin in this department and I feel this is why the OLD blood had to go. 15 years is good enough, AMD is looking to finally make an upgrade.

I just hope this isn't indicative of any serious internal turmoil at AMD.
With Intel and nVidia teaming up ( http://arstechnica.com/business/news...cessor-die.ars ) AMD is really going to need to stay strong over the next few years to survive.

I can't wait for the day when an AMD CPU is really competitive with Intel on more than just price. I want to see an AMD answer to Sandy Bridge that really shakes things up and gets us making comparisons at the high end instead of just relegating AMD to the budget-conscious choice.
I suspect that's more of an R&D thing than something that the CEO of the company would have a huge impact on, but maybe Meyer's replacement could inspire that.
Wishful thinking, maybe.

OMG, does this mean AMD will eventually and hopefully be competing with intel in the high end cpu market? rather than aiming to almost focus soley on the lower end netbook's, laptop's and desktops. Oh my I hope so!

Probably worried that they can't afford to pay his full pension if he had stuck around for a few more years.

Maybe paying the price for the lateness of Bulldozer? Will be a shame if AMD turns the corner in 2011 and Dirk M gets no recognition for it though.

one of amd's greatest mistakes since the very beginning was a lack of advertisement. i don't ever remember seeing a commercial advertising amd. intel however, not only made a good amount of commercials every year but they have GOOD ones too. even on the internet, i see more commercials advertising products with amd chips in it than commercials from amd themselves.

this mistake is so vast that there are people i know with an amd cpu in their own computer that even has the amd logo on it and they claim they never heard of the company.
THAT is where you know marketing fails.

i'm an amd fan and i hope they succeed but they don't get themselves known like intel.

I think you might be right. Why else would they push out a CEO that returned them to profitability after the troubles AMD was in a few years ago. Either something has gone terribly wrong within AMD or a buyout is in sight.

You only have to look back to october for the buyout.
But Dave Haynie never made it to CEO of Commodore, did he? Perhaps if Dirk had stayed in tech leadership the Athlon II might have made the same kind of waves the original Athlon did. I suspect he's made his money and is happy to move on - lets just see where he ends up - ARM maybe?

Over the last 5 years AMD have lagged badly against it's competition while it has come out with some pretty boastful comments that didn't come to fruition. We know all the PR departments talk bollocks but these guys just took the biscuit. They also had a full year headstart with DX11 but then as soon as the competition turned up, they just stumbled.

They have nothing of any value to bring to the table as things stand today, in either CPU, GPU or combined. Unless you are a die hard fan of AMD, why would you buy their products today?

New Blood is needed to lead this company. This could be the best move the board have made in the last 15 years!
