Plus side with resin the models stand up on their own as most metal ones always fell over, best to go into you're local gw and see what you think for you're self. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/ca...d=prod1250014a Is the latest finecast minature, brand new so would see what you think of that one. |

Something I've been meaning to ask.
In my chaos codex, for the marines, their wargear is listed as : Power Armour Bolt Pistol Frag Nades Krak Nades CC Wep Bolter Does this mean that they always have all of these, unless they've been replaced by other weapons as described in the upgrade bits? So I've got marines that are modelled with pistol + CC wep, do these not have a bolter to use?

Any of your guys got any experience with Vallejo Model Air paints?
I've been having a few issues with my airbrush and have decided to grab some Grey primer and White for basing which should arrive tomorrow.

Comparing Abaddon (Resin) to Abaddon (Metal) is like comparing a bucket of rust to a new car - It's worlds apart. Not to mention that they're an absolute joy to put together, and so much easier than their metal counterparts. I've started work on a Castellan for my Black templars. Still got a fair bit of GS work to do in terms of cloaks, tabbards etcetera. Shoulder pads too, actually. So far there's actually a lot of Dark Angel parts on there. Incidentally, that's a standard troop head on a terminator sized body - And is it just me or does it look fine? ![]() Still undecided about the sword.

Can't really make out the sword too well, post up a few more shots perhaps? Otherwise looking quite good.
I need to sort out paints again as I think most of my old stuff has dried up or separated out too much to be of any use. That and the lids have welded shut ![]() I want to paint Ghazghkull and Nightbringer. They're sitting on my table undercoated and ready to go...

Getting advice on an airbrush is worse than getting advice on a PC build. There are just so many differing opinions it becomes a nightmare to try and pin something down to make a decision. I ended up just buying one because I'm sick of using GW spray cans to base and simply don't have enough time to base all 150 of the models I have to paint by hand. I got pretty frustrated and bought an intermediate brush kit without compressor: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BADGER-200...item336948ba5d I ended up picking up a compressor on a long term loan thing from a friend of the family for free after balking at the minimum £150 price tag for an entry level compressor. The brush is nice, comfortable to hold and a piece of cake to clean. I do wish now that I'd gone with the first brush I was recommended simply because the one I got was a big investment (£85 for the kit) and if it turns out it's not for me or whatever it's a lot of money down the pan. The original one I was recommended was this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Badger-Airbr...1846367&sr=8-1 Supposed to be perfect for beginners deciding if airbrushing is the way to go for them and all the main airbrushing techniques are perfectly do-able with this brush (gradients, shading, etc) Getting started you'll also need this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Badger-Airbr...sim_k_h_b_cs_1 and some of this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT For a full intermediate level kit, you'll be looking at £200 for a single action, bottle fed airbrush, hose and socket, with a basic level compressor from a hobby shop (You could probably knock a decent chunk off by grabbing it all on eBay though). If the compressor doesn't come with moisture filters, you can add another £10/30 on to that for the 1/2 that are recommended (I only have the one). Here's where I started with advice and such: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum...2.page#2899102 The gravy of airbrushes are the dual action, gravity fed models on compressors with two moisture filters Brush: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BADGER-AIR...item3cba188956 Edit: I did spot a kit on eBay which had two brushes and a compressor with one moisture filter but it is a chinese made one that doesn't seem purpose made for minatures (although modelling is listed under the uses) and I couldn't tell you much at all about it: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIRBRUSH-K...item5635b6fe82

I was trying to use screen wash on recommendation from another site but this is an absolute no-no. Simply doesn't work. I started by using Vallejo thinner which worked really well but is a little expensive for what you get and how quickly you got through it.
Here are the most common ones: Thinning solution made of 50/50 windex to distilled water and then mixed thinner to paint 60/40. Vallejo paint thinner - How much you use differs from one colour/brand of paint to another Isopropyl alcohol - Usually used along with distilled water and not recommended for beginners because it can actually destroy some brands of paint. Plane water is also a no-no when thinning paint for an airbrush. Too thick apparently. I've gotten fed up with trying out the voodoo thinning mixtures and bought some Vallejo Model Air which I'm told can be sprayed right from the bottle, just waiting for it to arrive: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT The main reply I get when I ask about thinning is essentially: Look what other people do, try everything, see what works best for you. Which is really helpful /sarcasm.

I'd suggest grav feed being a primary concern, given the small volumes of paint we mix/use in this hobby - The syphon bottles I've seen floating around aren't exactly designed for small quantities
![]() That said, I'm no airbrush expert, so I could be talking out of my arse! I'll get some more pictures of the Castellan when I get a chance, what with it being at home atm and me going out for a game with my Deathwatch army tonight. Gonna be weird shooting things >.>

I have an airbrush kicking about somewhere (must dig it out and see if it still works) and as far as I can remember it is a dual action Airfix one which can do either gravity feed or suction as the front end rotates.
The suction feed is great for large area spraying such as base coating a tank as you can just load it up without worrying about having to remix and get the shades right again.

I hate this hobby,
went into GW to get some metalics, ended up buying a librarian and a venerable dread..

You all need to learn to resist- the easiest way is to think of how much you have to do already- i think it helps when ive got boxes of un-opened models at home as well.
Airbrushes look good, have seen some nice work with them on models, just money to invest into them. Still waiting on my 3rd yellow paint pot to arrive, will use as a extreme highlight once weyland games gets some stock in. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum...st/384939.page Shows whats coming out next for relases and finecast, pics from latest gw mag that goes on sale saturday- next Fantasy army is Ogres is confirmed as back page of tomorrows WD. Will put Ogres coming out in 2 months time, then see Necron's as a Christmas release, Ogres will be at Games day this year. |

Firstly the reservoir-less diaphragm compressor can make fine work very tricky, you get paint pulsing at low pressures. I bought a single airbrush which was cup-fed, and those are rather a large ballache, I'd say gravity-fed is a must have if you are painting miniatures like GW, even on full-scale models I'd be tempted to suggest getting gravity fed just for the ease of use and suitability for small amounts of paint. If I were to go for an upgrade on the eBay kit I'd say the biggest thing is a reservoir for the pump and a set of different sized nozzles (fine especially). All that said I'd highly recommend that kit for the money, the compressor is pretty hardy and 0 maintenance, the brushes are reasonable and double action for extra flexibility, and in the end the kit is cheap enough that if you don't use it often/hate airbrushing, you've not lost out that much. |
